It's Illegal To Copy Video Games?

So I have recently bought Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World from a local media store and I have gotten this message...

I used to own an SNES for years and have had lots of games for it and I NEVER got this message before. I'm trying to play this on an FC3 Plus but I don't know if that would make a difference... any thoughts or tips?

I really wouldn't worry about it, there are plenty of people who have roms of thousands of games and have no errors. This looks like it's a built in message to scare people or something. If you PM me, I can link you to a few sites where things like this won't happen if you're paranoid.

First time I've seen a message like that and I used to own a SNES myself with several titles including Super Mario World, Megaman X, Super Metroid, ect...

Probably what -Fallen- said, so don't let it bother you much.

I can't see the video atm but to answer your question, it's not illegal for you to copy a game you own if you want to keep the copy as a backup for your own use. It is illegal to download a ROM from the internet even if you own the game, and it is illegal for you to share your copy with anyone else, but the FBI aren't going to bash down your door for downloading a copy of Mario World to play on your PC.

Is it illegal to copy video games? Yes.
Is it socially acceptable to copy video games? In most cases, yes. (as long as you don't distribute them)

The FC3Plus is NOT an officially licensed Nintendo product which may be why you're getting those errors. If you find the game to be not fully playable, just play it on a real SNES.

This. I have an SNES now and it works fine. FC3 Plus is a waste... ugh.

                  ^ This.

FC3Plus is uber stiff putting games in and taking them out. I have a decent collection of fully working games and I can barely get them to work on it. Also the controllers are ****ing horrible and most games the controls are reversed and shit (Super Mario World for example).

My thoughts exactly. Not having an eject button kinda bothered me. It felt like I was wrecking the game or something. The reversed controls were a pain to try to get used to also. I just thought it would be convenient to have 3 systems in 1 I guess.

That's what my dad and I thought when our SNES had a piece break off, but we were wrong. Haven't used it now in months, it's just junk.

Eeegh. Wrong answer. You lose. No prize money for you. This, right here, is what big media want you to think. It is, however, a lie. Wildfireskunk is correct.

The only way it would be illegal would be if you broke some sort of copy-protection to make the copy, if you played both your original and the copy at the same time or allowed other people to, if you rented out or traded the copy, if you sold or otherwise gave away your original but did not destroy the copy, And/or anything else which wouldn't be legal to do with the original.

It's also perfectly legal to use emulators for homebrew.

It's usually illigal to copy a game when terms and conditions are included.

Fun fact: Most EULAs have something of the form "You may have additional rights which supersede these and vary from state to state" and "If any part of this EULA is found to be unenforceable the remainder of the EULA will remain in effect". It's actually part of your fair use rights (which may change at some point if new laws are enacted/etc...) and, as such, is part of your additional rights and renders any conflicting portion of the EULA unenforceable.

They can actually put just about anything they want in the EULA but it doesn't mean you legally have to abide by everything -- you don't have to abide by anything which isn't legally enforceable. In other words for which they did not have the legal right to restrict your rights.

The reason this doesn't apply to copy-protected things is because breaking copy-protection, even for otherwise legal purposes, usually violates the DMCA and that's where they'd get you.

Again, this is not meant to be legal advice, I am not a lawyer, etc...
