College courses getting dropped from college

Found out earlier today that a community college that I partially attend is going to be dropping courses for the 2011 Summer & Fall terms.

Kind of sucks because the courses that aren't offered there, I'd have to go elsewhere. Hurts me pretty hard because I'm already behind in my Bachelors. The universities in the area are going to be affected as well so that doesn't help either.

Anyone else having this same problem?

Wow, that really does suck. Online courses, perhaps?

I haven't yet had a problem with classes being dropped, however I am graduating from university here in June, so I won't be registering for anymore classes from now on. I think I got lucky though because my major is rather on the rare side and not many universities offer it to begin with, so dropping classes would likely mean dropping the whole major, which hasn't and likely won't happen.

Quite frankly, there is always a "budget crisis" no matter where you go to school.

I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my great uncle and major in chicken husbandry.

I can no longer major in chicken husbandry.

Misleading and very dramatic topic title.

Pennsylvania proposed a budget cut from state schools adding up to 53%. Now that cut is unlikely to happen, but to put that into perspective if all state school students got a 2000$ tuition increase that'd only take care of, on average, 30% of the cut. (On average, again, that'd be a 20% tuition increase that would be needed to cover the costs of just what the realistic budget cut would be, not the current massively proposed one.) Of course schools aren't going to make that kind of increase, so they're going to just cut operating costs instead.

I don't understand schools and how they use their budget, but it seems like every school I know they spend money on the stupidest stuff. For no reason at all they put 5-6 large flat screen TV's on the dining center here that just sit on MTV all day. Nobody likes to watch this crap and that was basically just throwing away $3000.

If you have budget issues and you are spending money on things that aren't directly related to facilitating the needs of the students then you are doing something wrong.

My college's student center has 2 TVs (i think): One on the first floor to watch whatever and the other upstairs in the recreation room to play video games.

There is nothing wrong with TV's, just replacing TV's with better TV's for no reason.

You should, no really you should, go and ask someone in school finances where the money comes from if its a state or state supported school. Often they will receive grants or backordered money to be spent on things that they thought could be afforded three years ago. Operating costs, which factor your teachers salaries, supplies and upkeep for the year, usually don't count towards building costs.

For instance, my school just built its fourth basketball court and gym, replacing the old one that was perfectly fine and renovated two years ago. This isn't affected by the budget cut because the state slated this money to go to the school five years ago. New stuff almost always comes from a separate part of the budget that affects your classes.

I don't know about classes getting dropped at my college but the scheduling they do is pretty crazy. If you don't go in early to sign up then your class times could be all over the place.

We recently cut our Computer Science, Speech Pathology, and Visual Arts Program because we didn't have enough money to support that. Also, the classes here somewhat shrunk in size so it's harder to get into the class nowadays. Sorta sucks overall :/
