Unreal 3 Demo AND new GeForce!!!

This is like, freaking huge gigantic news. Some dude taped a demo of Unreal 3, which runs on the currently not-for-sale GeForce 5 6800 FX. The demo is amazing- it's near cinematic quality, blows Doom III the hell out of the water. It's simply incredible, you must see it for yourself. You can d/l the file here:

    it's a GeForce 6800, no 5 in the name. alternately it's the 6 series.

It looks good, yes, but it's only really as good, not better than doom 3. Plus that was just a technology demo, so the actual game will probably be slightly less detailed for more playability.

Actually, the final game will probably be more detailed, or at least have the option to be more detailed. Have you seen screenshots of Half-Life a year before it was released? Of course, they were using the Quake engine originally...but even so, graphics improve as development continues, not worsen.

Saw it a few days ago. Damn, that motherfugger is the sheet. I love how the camera goes up to the bricks and each brick has so much motherfuggin' detail.

That imp thing is screaming "PLEASE BLOW MY BRAINS OUT WITH A BOOMSTICK!"

but in that aspect, you really couldn't get a good idea of how good the graphics were since it was shown on a (comparatively) low resolution video.

Sure the graphics are great, but they don't seem that much greater than those of Doom III.

              Wow. Graphics. *yawn*

I've ceased being impressed by graphics, really... The last game that I caught myself thinking "Damn, these graphics are cool." about was Viewtiful Joe. XIII was impressive, too, as well as most of the good games for the Gameboy Advance recently (Metroid : Zero Mission, anyone?).

If the game is fun, the graphics don't matter.

              I also believe that 2D > 3D.

Maybe it's just because 2D games (And "2 1/2D" games, such as Viewtiful Joe) have more "soul" to them... more than just graphics...

Of course, I'm not saying that all 3D games suck; far from it. I'm just saying that a lot of games nowadays focus on having the prettiest graphics or "best" engine... and not the gameplay, which is what should be focused on.

Just look at practically any generic platformer/shooter for the PS2/XBOX.

That's why I like the Gamecube... it may have some... quirky games, to say the least, but at least most of them have soul. There's crap for it, too, of course, but a lot less crap than the PS2/XBOX have.

And, of course, the PS2/XBOX have good games as well.

I'm actually becoming a little disillusioned with the gaming industry nowadays. It seems that only the companies that have stuck around since the beginning have any integrity left; any willingness to put out a game that doesn't appeal to the mainstream, games that focus on design and not being "cool" or having the "best" graphics... companies like Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Capcom, Namco, and Square-Enix. Of course, I'm not knocking all "modern" companies... just those try too hard to be "mainstream" and "cool" (*cough* Sony *cough* Microsoft).

              Hmm... this got really offtopic.

Anyway, I just wish that people would actually be willing to look beyond a game's graphics nowadays... I miss the days of the NES/SNES.

If I'm going to be putting hours and hours into a game I don't want to be looking at crap for all that time. (I also don't want it to sound like crap, but that's a different issue)

You can't say that graphics don't matter because graphics are about all that make Viewtiful Joe and XIII original (I haven't played either personally, so I'm not sure, but they both look very standard, albeit fun games). They have their own niche in the graphics department, sure, but them saying "Hey lets cel-shade" doesn't mean that the graphics are any less hyped.

I agree though, primarily. A great looking game that plays like crap will not be a good game. The graphics, though, are still something to marvel at, not from the perspective of the game, but from the perspective of the technology. That is, I believe, what anticrombie was going for.

Exactly how I feel. Except I would have said "I miss the days of Genesis and Dreamcast."

I still think Microsoft is responsible for striking the final blow to Sega and crushing thier Dreamcast out of business. No other system has any shit on the Dreamcast.

First system with a 3D Cel-Shaded game? Dreamcast. (Jet Grind Radio)
First system with an Online Console game? Dreamcast. (Phantasy Star Online)
First system with...er...a game as fun as Super Smash Brothers Melee? Dreamcast. (Power Stone 2)
Who had Ikaruga before it was ported to the Gamecube? Dreamcast. (As well as Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure 2 for that matter)

And not to mention that every single game made for that system, save a very few, was totally awesome and kickass. Remember Seaman? You cant get much more original than a game like that. Bangai-O? Frikkin sweet side-scrolling shooter.

                  Enough of my ramblings.

                          Nice triple post.

Sorry Omeg, to break it to you...but the Dreamcast had nothing, excluding Soul Calibur, PSO, and Resident Evil. It was a crap system with little or no third party support, worse controllers than Xbox (omfg), and graphics were the only thing going for it. Plus they looked outdated compared to the PS2 (Moogy was right, PS2 did kill it), and it was retarded to release it a year before Sony's megalith hit. People were eagerly saving up for it, they wern't about to blow their cash on a system that would be obsolete in a year.

True, true, true. That was a stupid rambling of mine. As you might have noticed, the only points I could make were the games, nothing about the system. In the end, dropping the Dreamcast and just making games was probably the best choice, cuz making great games is what they do best. (Damnit, Capcom! MAKE POWER STONE 3!)

But I have to disagree with you on the controller. It felt very comfortable in my hands, and there was no time when I had to reposition my hand so one of my fingers could reach a button (as opposed to X-Box controller). And there weren't that many buttons either, so as to avoid confusion (as opposed to the PS2 controller. Ever try to play Enter The Matrix on one? I found it impossible to get through one gunfight, but that's probably because the game sucks).
Anyways, I dont wanna start an argument over it. I just happen to like the Dreamcast controller.
