    Teenage Freedom or Solitary Entrapment

Tell me...what does freedom mean to you? [in the teenage sense]

Does it mean breaking all the rules?

Does it mean buying something by yourself instead of buying it with your
mom or dad breathing down your neck?

Does it mean doing what you love at the cost of your family's trust and love?

Or does it mean writing down the word "goddess" on paper and not feeling
guilty or ashamed about it? [religious]

I don't have a clear sense of what freedom really is in my life.
So I've made a lot of decisions that have made me feel trapped at most
times. I need to know...what does freedom mean to you?
    Any takers?

Re: Teenage Freedom or Solitary Entrapment

To me, teenage freedom has always been more of a mental sort of thing.
I've never really had any serious rules in my household, so it's about thinking on my own, thinking things through, and taking more responsibility for my actions.

To me freedom means being able to do things that are legal. It means to be able to live your life how you want it to be lived. If your not living your life the way you want to then your not living free. Thats my opinion.

Re: Teenage Freedom or Solitary Entrapment

I'm done with that phase of my life, thank god. It took a lot of work to be respected throughout most of my teenage years, and I've had plenty of experiences with miserable arguments and police blackmailing me into shutting up and staying home and doing as I'm told. At one point I let everybody in my life know that either they would treat me with dignity and respect, and I them, or the deal would be off and they'd never see me or have me in their lives again. Ever since then I've known what freedom is, and I feel like a human being.

i had relative freedom in my teenage years, but that was because i usually behaved myself and had earned my parents' trust. i did things that showed i deserved it and could be trusted with it. being free didnt mean going on and doing illegal things, it meant just not having my parents watch my every move. mainly they left me alone and let me do what i wanted. they knew i wouldnt do anything too stupid. they had to always watch my sister, and she hated it. but she had gone behind their back many times and had given them no reason to trust her, because of how often she lied to them. so they always were calling her to check on her, asked her about everything she was doing, they were always stalking her pretty much.

Re: Teenage Freedom or Solitary Entrapment

Freedom, from my perspective as a first generation immigrant, is different. I feel blessed to have the freedom to go to a school that helps me make the right decisions about what I want to do with my life. Also the freedom to try to get into any college I want and succeeding in getting an enhanced education that will make me a functional and hardworking citizen.

It's very sad to see so many kids that were born in this country that take everything they have for granted. Disrespecting their parents, disrespecting their mentors, disrespecting anything they don't agree with and being totally and utterly egocentric.

I was one of those disrespectful kids, but not to the point where everyone hated me. That's a path my 13-year-old brother has taken and it's painful to deal with him every day when it's clearly splitting the relationships he has with me and my other brothers. Teenagers have such a false sense of freedom that they believe in their sick minds that they're doing the right thing when in reality they're hurting the people that care about them most.

I have for the past year or two calmed down with my rebelling and have realized that the freedom I will gain after moving away to college and starting my own life after is going to be true freedom. A thing called "reality" that teenagers blindly label as "freedom".

Re: Teenage Freedom or Solitary Entrapment

                  Death is freedom.

In my eyes being independent and having responsibilities is not freedom. True freedom is when there's nothing to worry about anymore, when you can stop being paranoid or going crazy trying to take care of your family/pay bills/work, inner turmoils, what have you.

A lot of people think authoritative figures are trying to take away their freedom. i.e., teachers, parents, adults in general. When you're an adult, are you suddenly taken away from all of the authoritative figures in your life? No, there are new ones. People that think that way will be disappointed when they're older.

There are personal freedoms and the like, but I do believe the ultimate, true freedom is death. Relief from all of the ties and bounds you have here. Not going to get too far into religion here, but in general, yes. Whether you believe you'll go to heaven or rot in a grave, at least you'll be free/forget.

Re: Teenage Freedom or Solitary Entrapment

Guys, reading popular fiction based on philosophers of old and then doing a poor job of regurgitating it makes you pretentious and lame.

Freedom is arbitrary, and in different contexts means different things. Freedom is not necessarily an illusion, though it can be. But by that token so can anything. Death is freedom from obligation, though freedom is far more than just lack of obligation. It can also be the ability to say or do what you want, and death is not an enabler in that respect. The rules of society can be restricting, but that doesn't make it imprisonment. Freedom is not anarchy, and an ordered society does leave room for freedom of expression and many other freedoms we simply take for granted.

Re: Teenage Freedom or Solitary Entrapment

Just because I said freedom to me was no obligation doesn't mean I don't have a clear understanding of the different types of freedom, and what freedom can mean to the individual and how it can change based upon context. It's obvious the meaning of freedom is subjective and arbitrary. That's the point of this thread. Plus, this is CC.

He did specify "in the teenage sense" whatever that means, so that's why I took issue. And I didn't really take issue with what you said, more of what Nyokou said.

This is CC... and? I don't see how that's an excuse for anything.

My understanding of freedom, in all senses, can be shortly answered in this:

Freedom isn't an illusion, but solitary entrapment is. Elaborate y/n
