So what's the story behind Canadian Thanksgiving?

In America it's supposed to have been started when the pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock (Mass.?) were going to die from winter because they didn't know how to survive in America and the Native Americans (I don't know which tribe) came with food and saved them. Then they had a feast to give thanks for their good fortune.

At least I think that's how the story goes, I haven't heard it since maybe elementary school (grades 1-5).
