The state of grammar on FFR...

I'll put it bluntly : The average user of FFR has atrocious grammar and spelling. I seriously don't know why only about 100 out of the ~30000 registered users consistently post with correct/grammar and spelling (minus sarcasm/jokes and the occasional typo, of course). Anyway, I've devised a few ways to help improve the grammar of you dropouts.

    1. Coherency is a must. This means, basically, to post like English is your first language if English is your first language.

    2. Line breaks and tabs are your friends. Paragraphs increase legibility, whereas GIGANTIC BLOCKS OF TEXT (see : Specforce's posts) decrease it. (This means Jello and Nima, especially, too.)

    3. AOL slang/internet abbreviations are retarded. This includes using the letter "u" in place of the word "you", "y" in place of "why", "gr8" instead of "great", etc. No one wants to read that crap. Don't type like that; that's not how you speak in real life, so why speak like that online?

    4. Punctuation exists for a reason. Capitalization exists for the same reason. Properly punctuating and capitalizing your posts goes a long way towards making them more legible and intelligent-appearing. And no, this doesn't mean Typing Like This.

    5. Overuse of emoticons is stupid. Don't do it. Or at least disable smilies, those things look homoerotic.

That's pretty much all I can think of. If anyone has any addendums to this, please feel free to post them.

Yes, grammar and spelling are your friends.

At least make a half-assed attempt to capitalize the letter at the beginning of a sentence and put a period at the end.

For some reason I pride myself on being one of the about 5 people on the planet that uses proper capitalization and punctuation over AIM.

Recently I've gotten into a bad habit of dropping periods. I gotta fix that. =/
I watched clouds awobbly from the floor o' that kayak. Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, an' tho' a cloud's shape nor hue nor size don't stay the same, it's still a cloud an' so is a soul. Who can say where the cloud's blowed from or who the soul'll be 'morrow? Only Sonmi the east an' the west an' the compass an' the atlas, yay, only the atlas o' clouds.

Do we really need another sticky? It's so cluttered already, and it's not like many people will change their ways or anything like that.

Thank god this doesnt affect me.

That brings up another triad of points:

                      1) Nobody cares whether "god" is capitalized or not. Thats only for use in the Critical thinking section though. And nobody cares, so it doesnt matter.

                      2) Do we need to use apostrophes? I personally dont, so long as you are coherent (wrong: ur).

                      3) Learn to use the difference of Affect and Effect. It makes you sound like a dumbfuck when you use it incorrectly.

                      4) This is more than a triad now, but whatever. SPELL THINGS CORRECTLY. Moogy might have said this, I don't remember, but Jesus fuck. Otherwise, once again, you sound like a dumbfuck.

                      Signature subject to change.

Strunk & White's Elements of Style says to omit useless words. That means, therefore, that saying things such as "basically" and other pausing elements set inside commas are worthless.

PS: The therefore is irony fuckhats.

Tab does nothing on an HTML parsed forum such as this. It had to be hardcoded to even accept a carriage return instead of a

You mean punctuation and capitalization both exist to denote the start of a new sentence or a promer noun, interesting!

Nice incorrect use of or and sentence fragments, grammar queen.

Er, yeah... I probably shouldn't have used a sentence fragment there. Thanks for pointing that out.
