    "She's got the grit, integrity, good sense and fierce devotion to the common good that is exactly what we need in Washington today," McCain said.

    Palin, 44, told the crowd, "To have been chosen brings a great challenge. I know that it will demand the best that I have to give and I promise nothing less."

    Palin is a first-term governor who unseated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary in 2006 and went on to defeat former Gov. Tony Knowles, a Democrat, in the general election.

    She will be the first woman to be nominated for vice president as a Republican and only the second to run for vice president on a major party ticket, after Democrat Geraldine Ferraro in 1984.

    Palin also will be the first Alaskan to be on the ticket for either party.

    There's more to it, but the formatting makes quoting it awkward.

    Obviously a stunt to pick up the leftover Clinton votes, Palin herself has a pretty decent record up in Alaska, including dropping property taxes by 60% by reducing her own salary. She seems like a good politician, but McCain was probably more interested in her being (I think) the only female republican governor.

    ps the title of the article is so much better if you leave out "as vice president pick"

                  I literally fell to the ground and started laughing when I saw this...

                  The whole 18 or so months this election has been playing out in has been one of the most shameful and embarrassing things I've ever seen, but this however is McCain's own personal embarrassment...

                  Not that he had my support before hand but this just makes him look even more foolish (Which, I hadn't thought was possible until just this morning (._.'))

                          IMO the decision is pure genius. of course there are tons of women who would be more than willing to support McCain JUST because he's running with a woman VP. pre-vp predictions were that this election would come down to 1% of the voters. and i'd say McCain has just won over far more than 1% of the women who wouldn't support Obama once Clinton.

                          Of course, this means that republican attacks on Obama are now limited to name calling and portraying him as an "elitist" and a rock star, someone far beyond the middle class. no more claims of "he's not experienced enough" because if McCain dies in office (absolutely a possibility), we'll suddenly have a woman with TWO YEARS of political experience running the country. ya ok

                                      Wow. Just wow. This is absolutely the last person I expected him to pick.

                                      Not that I have anything against women, but he made a terrible choice for a VP. I've never even heard of this woman.

                                      I really don't think Clinton voters will be swayed by this stunt either. DNC did a pretty good job of supporting Obama, and both of the Clintons pledged their support for Obama.

                                          Yeah...it looks pretty bad on the outside. But let's give it time and see how it is gonna play out. You never know, she could be better than we are expecting. It looks like an iffy decision from the outside (or, as many claim, an attempt to swing the Hilary supporters), but you never know. She could end up surprising everyone. Though you have to think...McCain has been playing the inexperience card the entire time, he kinda can't anymore.

                                              I think it's funny that he should pick her and expect to pick up women (feminists), considering I read that Palin is anti-feminist. If only every woman knew that, I'm sure McCain would lose a bunch of votes.

                                                          I was just watching on CNN that she's under investigation because she tried to fire her sister's ex-husband for personal reasons. Even though she may look good in public, that seems pretty slimy...but what politician isn't.
