    Dragonball Movie

I don't know if this has been posted or not but; even though I thought it would never happen... a Dragon Ball movie is coming out.

Based on the Piccolo saga; the Dragonball movie will be starting production later this year.

    References:

Twentieth Century Fox is finally moving forward with a live-action adaptation of the hugely popular manga "Dragonball," casting the stars of the movie and setting a release date of next summer.

Justin Chatwin is starring as the hero while James Marsters will play the villain in the sci-fi adventure, which will be directed by James Wong. The movie has been penciled in for a worldwide release date of Aug. 15, 2008. Stephen Chow, the filmmaker behind "Kung Fu Hustle" and "Shaolin Soccer," is producing.

"Dragonball" is one of the most successful Japanese cultural exports of all time. The manga, created by Akira Toriyama and published by Tokyo's Jump Comics, was adapted into graphic novels, video games and a phenomenally successful television series that ran in Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America. "Dragonball's" popularity also generated more than $4 billion in merchandising sales. In North America, the property achieved the zenith of its popularity under the name "Dragonball Z."

The story follows an adult humanoid alien named Goku, who discovers that he was sent to Earth to blend in and destroy our population but instead elects to protect it from an oncoming alien onslaught bent on dominating the universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name.

Chatwin, who will play Goku, has already begun training under the auspices of stunt performance company 87Eleven, which has executed and designed action pieces in pictures such as "The Matrix," "The Bourne Supremacy," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" and "300." Marsters is playing the villainous Piccolo.

Wong rewrote the previous draft by Ben Ramsey.

Production begins later this year. Other major roles are currently being cast.

Chatwin, repped by WMA, is best known for his playing Tom Cruise's on in Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds."

Marsters is best known for his role as vampire Spike on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Piccolo. He is repped by the Kohner Agency and Himber Entertainment

Wong co-wrote and directed "Finale Destination" and "Final Destination 3," and was a writer-exec producer on "The X-Files." He is repped by Endeavor.

There was a thread somewhat recently about it.

I had faith that it would be reasonably decent, but all I'm seeing now seems to indicate that they're not being very faithful to the source material.

I think they should just stick to Animation and now Live Action.

I can't imagine this movie could be anything but horrible. It doesn't appear that they're using any ridiculous CGI to make it closer to the ridiculousness of dragonball.

Whatever master you trained under needs a swift kick in the balls. Dragon Ball doesn't have super absurd fighting like in Dragon Ball Z. They could easily make a good fight in Dragon Ball with just good choreography, wires, and a tiny bit of CG thrown in where needed.

That said, word is they got special effects hoes from the team that did 300 or something, so I'm pretty sure that any CG they use will turn out alright. But again, they don't need it. Not yet.

When did I say Dragonball Z? There's enough really fast movement, flight, etc. to make CG a better choice than wires. It will just come off as comical like Kung Pow or something without some CG to try to make it look badass.

                      Re: Dragonball Movie

You have to remember... The movie is based off of DRAGONBALL, not DBZ; Dragonball's more unrealistic counterpart.
If you read the new characters and the storyline changes they are adding in; you will see they are trying to make it as realistic as possible (Storyline wise...)

Im sure these directors know what they are doing when it comes to transitioning fantasy to movie.

All they will need to do is take out some of the unrealistic/corny aspects. They've done this
in other movies... Unfortunately in the other movies they've done this in, the unrealistic aspects were the parts people loved (Final Fantasy, Harry Potter, etc..).

With Dragonball though, people love the fighting and all the movies and ****. Thats what they will keep.
In the end they; they will probably make it half martial arts style movie half fantasy. Remove the Goku turning into a fking monkey, piccolo being green, penis resembling alien; and you are good to go.

Really, in Dragonball; those are the only things that would look corny if converted into a movie.

Honestly, I dont know what to expect but I loved to be supprised (No, not supprise buttsex ).
Maybe it will turn out good

Just because wires are used doesn't mean it will be corny. Its not going to be real flashy like the unrealistic aspects. If done right it will be fine.

I have doubts for this film. For obvious reasons but I really loved the series so I guess I'll give it a shot. Even if I only go to see how much they butchered it and how much it pissed me off.
