My friend is playing FF7 right now. From him I heard that you can only play some of the PS1 and PS2 games. But I'm not sure if he was just saying that or what. Google it.

I explained what personally I would probably due if the disk didn't play and I didn't know about the certain cross-compatible games. I don't have much common sense to things sometimes, so I would quickly try to "fix" this problem but cause trouble.

Some games are fully compatible, some are compatible to a certain extent, and some just won't work. For example, on my PS3, MGS (metal gear solid) plays completely fine with no errors. FF7 and RE 2 and 3 have some graphical glitches (some textures don't show up). As for not working, I can't get Einhander to work! T_T Though, like the 360, the PS3 does have downloadable updates to fix some issues as well as making incompatible games compatible.

The 40GB PS3 (the only one you can buy in Europe and Japan) has zero backward compatibility.
That means you cannot buy the $400 PS3 if you intend to play PS2 or PS1 games.Comment

No, I'm not talking about playing games from 2 generations ago.
I'm talking about how PS3 has like 8000 different models. Some play some PS2 games. Some play all PS2 games. Some play zero PS2 games.
Xbox 360? There may be four versions now, but they all have the same backward compatibility with Xbox games. Wii? Only one version, but the backward compatibility is standard.Comment

Reason to take out backwards compatibility was price chopping I believe.
Also, the Xbox 360 does not have 100% backwards compatibility with all xbox games.
Also, If i remember correctly the ps2 was the first system ever to introduce backwards compatibility.
