So let's run down some of the basics of GENERIC TECHNO MUSIC, so that we (intelligent, appreciative artists) can learn how to make interesting music. List all elements of GENERIC TECHNO MUSIC in this thread.
EDIT: This thread took off a lot better than I thought it would, so I started adding a few of my own edits to the list.
I'll start off with my two favorite elements of GENERIC TECHNO MUSIC:
1. Four-on the offbeat-floor basslines consisting of repeating the first note of the key that sound like their four-on the-floor kick counterparts, without the "kick my ass" part.
2. SAW TRIPLE-SAW TRIPLE-SAW TRIPLETS.
3.) Basic drum beat with a kick on every quarter note, a hi-hat on the (+)beat of every note, and a clap/snare on 2 and 4.
4.) Using the same chord progression throughout the ENTIRE song.
5) SNARE ROLL
6) This => http://www.megafileupload.com/en/fil...chnos-mp3.html
7) Random movie and sound clips situated around the song.
8) Mastering so bad that you feel like the bassline is going to eat you.
9) A low pulsing synth made up of 16th notes
10)Copy and Paste are your friends!
11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac
12) woman having an orgasm
13) Naming the songs generic trance names like Eternity, Euphoria, Dream, Forever, etc.
14)Also using the same vague cheesy words in lyrics in the songs, typically having a female sing them:
"Hold onto my forever, you are my dream, I'm your fantasy, let me reach you" etc
15. Low freqs
16. Mid freqs
17. High freqs
18. And all (most) places in between.
Whatever number we're at) Fruity Loops noob
19.) The song has a sense of layering, where one kind of sound is added every certain amount of measures, until the climax of the song which is when all the sounds are being played at once. (edit: ehhhhhhhhhhhh)
20. Mistakes are blessings in disguise
21) Thinking that you're the first one to do it.
22) Use a computer, preferably for ALL your instruments. (edit: also, use a microwave when eating, preferably for heating all of your food)
23) Sirens, sirens, sirens.
24) Ride cymbal=HARDCORE
25: Close your eyes...
26: When in doubt, add delay (edit: NO DOUBTS, GET LOUDER)
27) There can never be enough percussion
28) Make at least one reference to the loudness of your bass during the course of the song
29)Create your own scale
30)For your melody, play random notes along the scale, and mix it with combinations of other random notes along the scale.
31)remix a remix of a remix and call it your own and original, hoping people get lost along the way.
32) A loud black female vocalist
33. A quiet white male vocalist.
34) Make sure you really, really feel your own song. No matter how much you've abused of the preceding tips.
35) A robot vocalist.
36) Acid is your friend.
37) Involve DDR in any way
38. Have a male vocalist say "Uhnss" one per beat throgh the entire song
39) Tambourine 8ths. Never stopping. Ever.
40) 130 BPM. Everything else IS A CRIME. (edit: I'm gonna agree with Pyroshock that 140 is more common. Since we went over the amen break, this thread seems to encompass electronic music entirely)
41) That 808 cowbell sound, that's not actually like a cowbell, more like a sparrow hitting a milk bottle.
42. 16th note synths that start low, get higher, peak, and then drop again.
43. End with a door slamming.
44) Subliminal Backmasking!
45. When the mix gets too overly-complicated, add bongos.
46. Rising white noise emphasising reverse cymbals.
47. Falling white noise emphasising crash cymbals.
48. Vocal samples that sound like there's a fan switched on between the vocalist and the microphone.
49. That 'Woo!' vocal sample used in Butterfly Upswing Mix at the end of eery single damn bar.
50) Whatever you do, DO NOT use the same synth beat the whole way through the song. Otherwise, I will murder you in your sleep.
51) Random sirens rule!
572:electric piano solo (edit: I guess sirens and electric pianos are a recurring pattern.)
Please feel free to contribute.
