Hey all!
I need some nerds to help me figure out if I'm being stupid with the combination of parts.
First of all, I'm going to buy an alienware preassembled (which makes the combination of parts question seem redundant, but I'm paranoid). Yes, I know that I can get the same stuff for about half as much if I just build it myself, but I'm paranoid and I don't trust my troubleshooting capabilities and I tend to use customer support lines, so I like buying preassembleds. I'm not here to argue build vs. buy.
Model:
Alienware Area-51 7500
I'm not opting for the SLI edition because all it does is charge you $10 for giving you the option to buy the dual gpu stuff and low latency memory, which I don't inted on getting unless someone can tell me why.
Processor:
They are damn expensive. I'm hoping a Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz 2MB cache will be enough for whatever I want to do, being WoW, EQ2, and whatever games I may get hooked onto for at least the next 5 years. Upgrading to 2.66 GHz 4MB cache would cost $350 or opting for Extreme (2.66 GHz 8MB cache) would be $950
OS:
Vista Premium
Motherboard:
nVidia nForce 680i SLI
Memory:
4GB DDR2 Performance SDRAM at 800 MHz - 4x1024MB
It's cheap, will be cheaper in the future, and I'll be waiting a bit to buy the machine anyway due to video card issues so I don't mind future-proofing the memory a bit.
System Drive:
RAID 0 2x250GB Serial ATA 3GB/s 7200 RPM w/2x8MB Cache
RAID 0 only cost me $100, and it doubled my space, so why not?
Video Card:
768MB nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX
I've read conflicting stories on the worth of SLI, and there's only 3 PCI ports, so if I get the dual, I would have to choose between a physics or a sound card. And again, I'm definitely waiting for the drivers to be 100% Vista compatible and factory installed before buying anything.
Physics:
Ageia PhysX - 128MB GDDR3
$200 so if it's not worth it, I'd love to know.
Sound:
Creative Sound-Blaster X-Fi
$100 is also expensive.
As of now I do inted on buying both those extra cards, not leaving room for SLI. I figure a single 8800 GTX should be fine. I've been stuck with a 16MB ATI on my laptop for 4 years, I figure upgrading to a 768MB will give me an erection for a decade regardless of how many of them I have :P
Also, I don't really know if there's any applications that really require an advanced physics or sound card, or if I should ever worry about there being one.
Power Supply
1000W, I'm not taking any chances.
Cooling System:
I've read some horrendous stories about condensation related to liquid cooling systems, but if someone can give me good reason to shell out $168 for alien's liquid cooling, I'll listen.
Monitor:
Dell 20" ultrasharp
Anyway my main query is about the processor and I really don't know if SLI is worth anything or if there are any problems with it. And I don't know if for the parts I have in here if liquid cooling is necessary. This is going to be a damn expensive machine anyway (~4k, about a month's salary...) so if an extra few hundred will save the rest of it and make it last another couple years, I'll do it. I should note on that - I want this to last me a long long time. You need to know that I have never played an MMO due to never having an adequate machine (I mentioned my current 16mb video card). I will be playing WoW and probably EQ2, I plan on buying Heroes of Might and Magic 5 (grew up with and love the series, what can I say?) but I'm not a crazy hardcore gamer, plus I'll be working 45ish hrs/wk so who knows how much I'll actually be playing. I really want this to last a decade (hence why I really want Vista instead of sitting back with tried and true xp), so if there's no way the core 2 duo 2.13 ghz will last that, I need to know.
Thanks!
