That was one of the most intense movies ever. With that said, I really liked it. Definitely one of the most powerful movies I've seen in a very long time, up there with the fountain (and more accessible than tf).

However, the previews were so terribly misleading in my opinion. The movie is radically different (which can be a good thing, since not much is spoiled), though it was definitely unexpected and brutally realistic. War in most movies is idealized; this movie really is a brutally realistic view of the world told through a fairy tale a little girl uses to escape from her harsh reality. It's also incredibly sad (or maybe not, depending on how you view the ending), which was also unexpected. There are also sheds of deep insight into ethics, politics, religious motives and other things.

Just about everything in the movie itself was incredibly well done, and that lullaby tune is haunting. Baby eater scene had me stressed out and it takes quite the film to get me going XD

So, if you're prepared for some serious shock value and lasting impact of a very serious film that is exquisitely well done, go see it. It isn't for little kids though, so don't expect something light.

Reach, in response to your comments on the end of the movie:

My friends and I have had some interesting discussions about the possibility that the whole "fairy tale" may have, in fact, been reality. For example, the chalk. When she escapes her room to kidnap her brother, she is presumed to have used the chalk. I doubt she could have known the house well enough already to know a secret way out a room she was just put in, and especially to avoid her guards.

Also, there is the mandrake root. Her mother begins feeling better when Ofelia puts the root under her bed (very possible coincidence, albeit) and immediately takes ill again after the root is destroyed.

And finally there is the fact that she found a way through the labyrinth when led by the fairies, something she couldn't do when confused and running on her own.

I'm glad the previews didn't give much of anything away, and I agree with Polk. Kinda cool how that is left up to the audience in a way, along with the moralistic/religious undertones. The creature design was really tight.

The ad for this is so misleading. I loved the movie, but not in the way I thought I was going to...

I mean...

One minute you have the cool faun guy and a muddy tree scene and the next thing you know you've got a guy just shooting people in the face, smashing peoples faces in with beer bottles, knives down peoples throats...ect XD I would say they showed 90% fantasy and 10% war in the ad the the movie is 70% war 30% fantasy.

Yeah, I ended up enjoying the realistic parts much more than the fantasy parts, to be honest.

It was an incredibly good movie. Certainly one of the very best I've seen in a long time.
