Why all the psychological "mech" stuff?

I don't get this. Suddenly it seems every show that includes giant "robots" has to be some psychological tripfest.

So far, this is the list of anime I don't understand and don't want to try doing so:

Evangelion (out of the blue Shinji is going mental and there are pictures and sound and stuff is kinda happening but it doesn't matter watch the movie wait the movie doesn't make any sense either now everyone's dead gg world)

RahXephon (something about music and then the main character dies but not really he was in a tree but then he's not ok)

Escaflowne (or maybe there really was absolutely no plot in the show whatsoever as this was the impression I was left with)

Nadesico (I have no idea what happened in the movie or at the end of the show. Then again, I probably wasn't paying attention or whatever)

Eureka SeveN (no idea. Stuff I guess)

Maybe I'm just unperceptive or something. These shows just fail to make sense to me. Granted, I'm the type of person who doesn't care to overthink about what I watch. If something isn't surface-level explanatory, I won't get it.

My question is not an explanation for these shows because I won't get it no matter how hard you explain it to me anyway. My question is, why the psychological tripfest solely associated with this genre? I just don't get it =/

Evangelion, at least, makes perfect sense. The only "confusing" elements of the show are the actual plot points that it fails to explain adequately.

If I had watched the other shows, I would understand them as well. Most anime isn't terribly complex, you know.

What's this "suddenly" jazz? Evangelion, Escaflowne, and Nadesico aired a decade ago.

It isnt only Mecha animes that dive into pyschological tripfests, take for example Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent, or Haibane Renmei of which much emphasis is placed on the psychology of it's characters.

The only reason why the Mecha genre seems to be plagued with psychological tripfests is because all the stories are very similar. Look at how popular Evangelion became...it is still extremely popular. So, what's to stop other animation companies from cashing in on Evangelion's success?

I mean, look at the Power Rangers and how successful they were in America. Now think back to all the clone television shows that sprouted up during the Power Rangers' popularity. Same thing.

Jewpin, I mean the start of it all was as it seemed: It was robots fighting robots and hardly anything more. You know as well as I that Gundam really set it off.

Omega, my odds of actually finishing the series were extremely low previous to this new information.

Moogy, as I said, I don't like to think more than I need to when watching anime. If there's not a hint or a foreshadow to something, I won't get it. I didn't even get that Adam in Evangelion was the first one (omg adam n eve rofl).

Jewpy, my main question is, why do giant robots herald this? I understand that purely-psychological anime like those shows call for it, but this is ROBOTS FIGHTING ROBOTS. Something about that seems to make producers say "GOTTA MAKE IT TOTALLY WEIRD AND HARD TO EXPLAIN LOL" and I want to know what that is.

PS - I was mainly talking about Eureka Seven as it's relatively new and following the same trends. I don't understand any part of what's going on and can only hope it ends soon.

12 years ago (at least I think it was that long) Neon Genesis Evangelion aired.

It was an unprecedented success in the anime world. Never before had a show of this stature (ie 26 episodes + low budget) garnered such a huge fanbase.

Logically, many studios realized that Giant Robots + psychological drama = happy fans, and thus Eva gave birth to a new genre of anime, which just happens to be what you are complaining about now.

            Simple as that, really.

So the idea was "play the markets with what worked" and turn "robots fighting robots" into "robots fighting robots but wait look out for the plot twist as we realize that the robots are ---- and it's about to ----------"

              -_-

Well, the idea is to make money.

Anime studios are businesses, you know.

Because 80 episodes of robots fighting starts to get old.

Apparently not as Gundam is still going on and still popular.

Ok, so psychology worked. Why not try something else for a change to keep it from robots vs robots?

Alright, I am unleashing the Otaku inside me as much as it pains me to do so.

                      *Warning: Spoilers*
Evangelion is not about Robots fighting Robots. Eva's and Angels are organic beings. Eva's were born from Adam, the first Angel. Humans were born from Lilith, the second Angel. Eva's, angels, and humans all have nearly identical dna make-up. There are no robots in RahXephon either. Again, they are organic beings.
