    classic legal questions

i figured this would be the best place to post this question, but if it isn't feel free to move it.

are songs 'legal' to distribute if they are from composers who've been dead for like 50-100+ years easily? Kinda like how it is for authors who've been dead for a really long time? i mean work from like brahms, bach, and peeps like that? Or is there a specific company you gotta get rights from? Thanks in advanced
