i plug it in my USB port in the front of my computer ( the secondary one) but it wont work. what do i have to do?

I'm going to assume you mean configuring the buttons, not booting up stepmania (it just occured to me... if you're trying to use a pad to play ffr and not stepmania, stop. don't do it.. it's a pain in the ass to set up and you just get a million boos anyway).
configuring buttons is done by going into options under stepmania and selecting "config key/joy mappings" or whatever it's called. Then you configure them, using the instructions at the bottom of that screen.Comment

try the test input and bounce up and down on your pad. if nothing happens, then your adapter or your pad or whatever must not be compatible with stepmania.Comment
