    New (Real) Revolution News!

May 12, 2005 - The Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005 is still days away, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft from debuting its Xbox 360 console on MTV. And now Nintendo has followed suit, revealing some new, meaty details about its next-generation console, codenamed Revolution.

In a recent New York Times article, Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan describes the console as "very, very sleek." The system, which is reportedly tiny, will stand horizontally. Its height will reportedly be no more than three DVD cases stacked flatly on each other, or slightly more than an inch. That makes the console theoretically smaller than Apple's recently released Mac Mini computer.
Although Nintendo has historically selected proprietary media formats, such as the GameCube Optical Disc, for its platforms, the publisher is with Revolution opting for a more standardized medium. The new console will play standard DVD media, according to the company. Nintendo has not yet revealed if Revolution will as a result be able to play Hollywood movies on DVD, but that seems very likely at this point.

At the Game Developers' Conference in March, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that Revolution would offer Wi-Fi online connections out of the box and would be backward compatible with GameCube, or able to play GCN software.

According to recent information, Revolution will also be able to play high-definition games and regularly go online.

Finally -- something of a no-brainer given the popularity of the Wave Bird pads -- Revolution's still-secret controller will be completely wireless. Controllers for Microsoft's Xbox 360 are also wireless. Upon hearing this news, puppies everywhere let out a collective cry.

More details to come at E3 2005. Stay tuned.

From what I've read here, the Revolution could very well get to 2nd place in the console wars.

I read today in th LA Times that the Revolution will once again, focus solely on video games. While the Micosoft and Sony are fixing to make digital media centers. Which could either hurt or help Nintendo.

The irritating thing about that is that it's kind of a "why not?" feature. Yeah, it'll save me all of twelve seconds to rip out the A/V plugs and put in the ones for my DVD player, but that's twelve seonds I don't want to waste.

and why couldn't it get first? CUS PS IS KING OMG YES I RULE...the fact of the matter is Revolution will have better online play than 360 or ps3 (b/c it's free, mainly)...it will be revolutionary...as in it will actually offer some new forms of gameplay (how long will it take you all to get sick of the same FPS and RPG games recreated?)...b/c I for one am already sick of it. A few graphical updates and a few control tweaks aren't enough to keep me interested in the "high-tech games..."

Actually Xbox is comming out with two forms of online.. Gold and Silver.

The silver one lets you get online and talk and chat and socialize and all that good shit.. but with no gameplay.

The gold one lets you have gameplay and everything. I forgot where I saw the article on these two buts its pretty sweet.

Also, Chromer is right, it will go to second place, right under the Xbox and right above the PS3.

And no, Nothing I have said needs to be edited by anyone for errors, i have checked it and rechecked it.. its perfect the way it is. (I don't mean typos)

I wouldn't call myself a fanboy since I own a GC and a PS2. I'm just saying with the current market, Sony owns 65% of the video game industry with the PS2. Nintendo and Microsoft, no matter how great their systems are, can't stand up to Sony mega console. That statement was based on economical views, not fanboyness.

Also, President Iwata of Nintendo himself said quote," Players today do not want online play. They want a new innovative way to play games." unquote. Which in a way is true but also very wrong. We see today that even though Sony is a game God with the PS2, the PS2 is playing 2nd fiddle ro the Online Giant called XBox Live. Over a million subscriptions!? Sony, has to develop a very good online srvice to counter XBox 360's online capabilities. You'll notice I left Nintendo out, because at the moment,, the only things we know about the Revolution is that it has Wi-Fi. That's about it.

So in the end, we know too much about XBox 360, not enough about PS3, and basically in the dark with the Revolution. IMO I believe the future console wars will be the same except for one change:

                          1. Sony's PS3
                          2. Nintendo's Revolution
                          3. Microsoft's XBox 360

To answer to your post 87, I seriously beleive the XBox won't really have a chance once PS3 and Revolution comes out. Online subscriptions can only go so far if you don't have games to back it up. And from many many sources I've read and seen, many Game developers are taking thier projects to Sony after seeing how powerful the PS3 is over the XBox 360 is. But you never know........

Not to be fanboyish, but Sony isn't going to be winning if they don't release their console when Nintendo and Microsoft do.

Other than that, this is great news. I don't need my VIDEO GAME CONSOLE to be able to do everything. That's what a computer is for.
