Gradius V, Contra, and similar games

I love Gradius V. LOVE it. Then again, I love Gradius III. Anywho, when I play Gradius V with other people, they all complain and seem to hate it. They don't realize how awesome it is and think it sucks because the gameplay is only 2D. May be they're just not old school enough.

The PS2 Contra (Shattered Soldier, I think?) was a terrible mistake. Rather than building on the old system they changed it and made it suck majorly. It lost its charm and I can understand why it wasn't big.

But the issue I'm wondering about: have games like these, 2D games, gone completely out of style? If so, what about them has caused them to decline so much. Hardly anybody has either of these games, and many probably haven't even heard of them. They aren't exposed as much to the public, probably because companies think they won't sell big, but why? Are people really so shallow as to think that them not being 3D makes them bad games? I'd like to think not, but I'm not sure. So why, do you guys think, are these games so unpopular?
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright.
And I write the blog for their website.

Plus I do cool programming in-house that you'll never see. =O

The Gradius series is great. They fucked over Contra: SS really badly, though.

So, Moogy said it in less words and got straight to the point.

Contra was doomed anyway. Once you release an awesome game, that series will always continue to fall.

Not really, Kenzya. Gradius V is definitely the best Gradius I've ever played (except Parodius ololo). It's a ton harder, the levels are more than just scrolling mountains and generic backgrounds from right to left, the bosses are awesome and creative, you're able to die and keep playing without dying 50 more times immediately, and it just looks so damn good. Contra, I don't know what they were thinking by making the weapon system completely different. Whoever thought that getting rid of all the powerups would make the game more fun was a complete idiot.

But I think anti may have a point. Pretty much everybody who has played Gradius V with me has been like "man this is so hard!" I always put it on Easy mode, too, and I complain that it's too easy. And I bet G5 is nothing compared to Ikaruga (I think that's its name...). Even though that game isn't a classic remake, it's still in the same basic genre, and I don't think I've ever seen it in mainstream stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy, where most people get their games. Is it just hardness that makes people not like these games? Do YOU guys even appreciate these games?

Most of the younger people who play games now never grew up with shmups like some of us did. The games keep getting harder and harder and someone who has never played something such as Raiden or the original Gradius can't tend to keep up with the games' pace. I own Gradius V and it's awesome but the other people who have played it with me say it's too hard.

Did anybody actually beat the original Contra without using the 30 rest code?

I know I couldn't. But the snow place just owned so hard. I loved taking down those tanks from right on the edge of the map where the bullets would barely nick your foot but not actually hit you so you didn't have to jump.

Oh, and we all love the mother brain. Yep. Spewing monkeys from your brain is the best thing ever.

The coup de grace of course is when you're in the non-side-scrolling levels (2 and 4) and you're behind the laser wall. When you hit up and just go "BZZZZZZZT" and look all stunned, life is good.

I never played Gradius, sadly. Only Contra and Contra III. They aren't "ZOMG BEST EVER!!!" because it's outdated technology and really uncomparable to games of today like Half-Life 2 or Tales of Symphonia. But, one could make the argument that they were the best games of pre-1990 and maybe owned throughout the final years of the 20th century.

=O YOU'VE NEVER PLAYED GRADIUS!? I'm pretty sure you're one of the fans of Ikaruga, I suggest you check out Gradius. If nothing else, get Gradius III for an SNES emulator and try it out. Seriously though, G5 is awesome.

And I think it's funny how people think Gradius V is so hard. Sure, the levels are built so you have to think more and on harder difficulties it can be quite insane, but the hit box on your ship is so much smaller. In older games there were always times where I thought "WTF THAT DIDN'T HIT ME AND I DIED!!" but I don't know how many times I've seen something hit my ship just barely and I don't die in Gradius V.

But seriously, something needs to happen to give the classics a boost again. The flash games that are kinda like classics are nowhere near as good as the old versions, and it's sad that so many people don't appreciate what many of us grew up on.

Yeah, the hit detection on Gradius V makes it so the shots have to hit the direct center of your ship. But while people cry about these games being so hard, I think that's the reason I like them.

I beat the ORIGINAL Gradius, for the old-school people, and I beat Super Contra without using the 30 lives cheat.

I wouldn't say I like it being hard. I honestly like games like Gradius, even easy ones. Although, challenges are good because the game lasts longer. I still play Gradius III sometimes, so I know I'll keep playing Gradius V long after it's more than old.
