Oh you're totally not the only one; a lot of the higher level players I know play on downscroll. First starting out I always thought I was one of the only downscroll players but as I went on I realized there were more and more so it felt pretty good.

Upscroll is pretty difficult to me because I grew up playing a metric fuck ton of Guitar Hero/Rock Band so I pretty much grew up on downscroll so it only made sense to play it here, too.

I play upscroll, but I can still read downscroll at probably a D4 level. It's definitely not easy to reverse what you're used to, but it's kinda whatever you started out on and are used to.

It's the same sort of reason and x-mod file is difficult, you change the way it reads and you can't muscle memory it anymore, enough practice and you could, but hey if it isn't broken don't fix it unless you wanna learn just because.

Though I'm the opposite, I cannot read FFR / SM down-scroll that well. But Rockband and Guitar Hero I'd be fine.

No, you're definitely not the only one who plays on downscroll. In fact, there are lots of downscroll players in FFR and other 4-key rhythm games. I'm a downscroll player myself, and I cannot read upscroll, just like you.

Personally, I do not believe there's such a thing as playing 'normally'. While it might be common for FFR players to use upscroll, if the mods you use help you get accurate plays, then there's no need for you to switch to use other mods, unless you're looking for a challenge or you think they would help improve your performance.

Some players might become accustomed to one particular scroll direction from the rhythm games they've played. As an example, DDR, ITG, and Pump It Up use upscroll by default; Guitar Hero, Beatmania IIDX, and Piano Tiles use downscroll only. Some might also be able to read in both upscroll and downscroll. For others, they simply prefer reading in one particular direction.

Upscroll is honestly more abnormal than you realize. Most of us use upscroll because its the default on FFR and its what DDR uses. Its what most of us learned on. 90% of rhythm games actually use downscroll though. The ones with upscroll as default even usually have the option to switch to downscroll. Sadly its rarely possible to use upscroll on games where downscroll is default. Its perfectly normal to use downscroll in the game. Just choose whichever you you prefer to use and stick with it.

i'm D7 and can't read upscroll at all. like, for official tournament preview videos, i don't even know what's going on since it's always upscroll lol. it's just a bunch of flashing colors.

Would you guys argue that down scroll is easier to be better at or is it truly just a whatever you’re more comfortable with?

I think learning whatever scroll direction best really depends on the person. Everyone's different, and their unique sets of preferences would influence which scroll direction they could learn and read better.

Using a scroll direction you could read easily and enabling other mods to increase note readability and keep relevant features during gameplay are some of the most important factors on improving accuracy and getting further in the game.

My first rhythm game was O2Jam(7k) which was down scroll and I also played bandmaster(6k) (down scroll as well) and guitar hero before Stepmania/FFR.

What's weird is that I can only read (4k) upscroll, but I can't read (4k) down scroll at all despite being used to it for (6k/7k).

It's like something is wrong with habits and spacing.

I can't imagine anyone would think that tbh. Off the top of my head I know Etienne and CHRS4LIFE use upscroll and they are amazing at their games. I just think that a lot more games use downscroll than upscroll, like guitar hero, so that is why a lot more people are comfortable with downscroll compared to upscroll.
