No, we can see black holes. They emit X-ray radiation. As I explained earlier, black holes present a rather unique problem for the Second Law Of Thermodynamics because black holes, by their nature as sort of a one-way system in which things can go in but not out, decrease the overall entropy in the Universe. Entropy, however, must increase, which is why X-rays form spontaneously just outside the event horizon of the black hole. Hawking and Penrose did work on this, and it is off the classic A Brief History of Time that I base this argument.
Oh and the real equation is E<sup>2</sup>=m<sup>2</sup>c<sup>4</sup>+p<sup>2</sup>c<sup>4</sup>

Yeah, I believe everything kain said was settled in the original thread. Kinda sucks that he wrote all of that...
Also, some black holes can be seen by funnels of radiant matter that appear to be spewing from them, due to the matter being whipped around, since nothing can actually escape from a black hole. Imma have to read up on that again.
talisman, I'm very glad to see someone else reads Hawking. A Brief History of Time is one of my favorite books.

You can see where black holes exist in the centre of galaxies because there is a "gap" in the stars... its not that hard to find, especially one close to us IE. andromedaComment
