Can’t add background image to song

I downloaded several packs and a lot of songs had no backgrounds. I already know how to add images by dropping it into the song folder but it doesent read it in game. I took one image and made it a .png and it still didn’t work, renamed it and resized it and the image sill wouldn’t show up in the song. I restarted the game, my computer, and matched my image to the ones that already worked and still it doesent register the background.
    What am I doing wrong?

Honestly, I have no idea how to open the .sm file. When I click on it my computer says there is no application to open the file with and when I tried stepmania it wasnt allowed. so...what do I use to access the .sm file to change it

Open the .sm file with Notepad.

I opened the file with textedit (thats all I have) and did exactly what I needed to. the background image file matched what I put in there and everything
for example, the song is "kill everybody", the background image i added is called "killeverybody.bg.png" and I added that to the file that says background so its "#BACKGROUND:../killeverybody.bg.png;" and when I close and re-open stepmania and play that song, the background is still all galactic looking with "no background" written horribly across the screen. I even tried changing the "." to a "-" and still nothing.

Ive done everything instructed to change the background and the game still isnt reading it.

Upload the file and I’ll take a look at it.
