    Being "better"

Okay Jello brought up something interesting today.. we were talking about music. We were talking about SpookG and SGX. I said I didn't really like Spook's style that much, even though he may be "better" at making music than SGX and he makes his own sounds and all that.

So I was thinking... does it really matter who may be better, as long as it sounds good and you like it? Something like Shpongle's music may be "better" than say, Classical Insanity by DMAshura, although I enjoy Classical Insanity a lot more. A lot of DMAshura's music may have sort of a midi style to it, or may sound cheesy, but does it really matter?

Discuss. Please no hostile posts, I want this discussion to be flame free since I know a lot of people can get very defensive over their taste in music.

It doesn't matter who's "better" at making music.

All that matters is who YOU think sounds better.

you are comparing thingso n two different levels.. Skill and the music itself.

I really don't know if I am more technically masterful than SGX, that isn't the point, but only musicians really give a crap about skills in songwriting. When I describe a song to someone, I point out certain things about the synths, chord progression, melody, etc. I have friends who are like, it makes me feel this way, or I love the lyrics. We look for different things in music.

I never liked the Cure much, but I couldn't say they sucked, because it simply wasn't true. I listened to Less Than Jake a lot more than the cure, but that is because their tone was more attractive to me. That's just personal opinion, and yours is no better than mine, so it is pointless to argue who is superior on the "i like this song more" . Different tastes are why we have different genres of music..

        Here's how I see it:

Any sound is equal to any other sound.
Example: ("Heavy Metal"-esque screaming and yelling into a microphone) = (Star Guitar's chorus)

However, it is what you do with the sound that makes it cool. Star Guitar's chorus could have sounded like crap, but it didnt because of the way the effects made a groovy tune. In theory, Heavy Metal Screaming could sound just as cool if it was used right (in my opinion).

I dunno if you should say "better". More like "I prefer....." The only thing you can tell for sure with any art is what you like yourself, and not what is better than the other for everybody.

And I'm not sure what you mean by "makes his own sounds" as something Spook does and I do not. I don't use loops or presets, or stuff like that.
