I was just thinking about how to improve skill quickly, and it seems that some songs are just way more efficient in improving skill than others. For example, a lot of songs will waste your time by including parts which are too difficult or too easy. But some other songs have a very stable NPS range, which is better for practicing.
I'm guessing that in general people have a certain threshold of NPS where if the number of notes per second is larger than a certain specific amount, performance drops dramatically.
For example, if the NPS is below 12, a player will perform at 99% accuracy, but at 13 NPS the player quickly resorts to mashing.
So the theory is to choose songs which are exactly below the threshold of a performance drop, and consistently stay at that level. I'm searching the database for these amazingly consistent songs.
I found a lot of songs which have relatively flat NPS graphs. But in practice, they can feel different, so it's fun to try them out and see which ones are amazing. Eternal Nightmare is an example of a consistent 9 NPS song. Mercury Lamp is the most flat 10 NPS song I could find, along with Lunar Eclipse.
There are a lot of great "practice songs" which have flat NPS distributions at all levels. It's easy to pick them out by using the search engine and looking at the graph in the background. By doing this, you can "cherry pick" songs that might be best for your level.
