How open are you about fiffering IRL?

Does anyone in real life know that you play FFR/use the forums? And if so, who have you told?

I've told a couple people that I play FFR while I was at college. I'm becoming a little self-conscious about it though (but that's mostly because I'm self-conscious about the time that I spend online in general), so I've started to just not talk about it whenever I meet someone new.

I only play rhythm games in college when I'm around my IT friends that also play osu!/Cytus. Otherwise, I avoid it. I've had enough of "did you memorise all the arrows/do you play this game everyday/no wonder why you V-graded English" and other annoying questions/remarks I receive all the time. (okay, the last remark didn't occur in college at all, but something similar happened back in high school)

As far as I know, nobody I know in real life plays FFR, or rhythm games in general to be honest. I have told a few people about FFR and other rhythm games I play though, and the usual response I've gotten was "What's FFR/x rhythm game?"

I don't really tell people about me playing rhythm games unless I know them well enough for some reason; I think I'm probably self-conscious about it as well.

I met one of my best friends because we both just happened to play FFR. I've never met anybody who looked upon it negatively. Most people just think it's really cool and then want to try it and when they do and can't read anything, they realize how much of my life I've sunk into this shit game they're like ooooh. ~_~ But yeah like I said, nobody really cares. Most people I talk to regularly know.

Re: How open are you about fiffering IRL?

It's on the list of the most significant things in my life right now, but I certainly don't lead with it, because I find it really hard to explain to non-rhythm-gamers.

Even then, one person I talked to randomly said they had played it a few years ago, but after I gushed about it for a few minutes, they really didn't have anything to say about their experience, other than "Oh, maybe I'll check it out again sometime."

I've managed to introduce the game to my roommate successfully, but he hasn't played the game more than an hour or so in total.

In short, most of my friends know I play this game, but to them it's just some esoteric "thing" that they can't really understand the appeal of. Kind of like trying to explain my appreciation of math to people.

FFR seems like a very intimidating game to my friends and they don't seem interested because it is surprisingly both difficult to learn and difficult to master. They'd rather invest their time in games where they see more potential for themselves.

I'll openly admit to playing ffr only if asked or if the time is right/presents itself. Same thing goes for my YouTube video with the 5 million views, I won't show people my channel or the video unless they ask what I do on YouTube. For that matter, I keep to myself about both subjects. Being famous (even slightly) sucks, people expect so much from you, they expect every video to be fantastic and all that.

Re: How open are you about fiffering IRL?

in high school, I used to play ffr/sm in my computer arts classes along with xiao and wtfbrandon because we had nothing better to do after finishing assignments early. in college, there was only one time I played sm in public and it was out of boredom and I was around a couple people I was cool with.

none of my coworkers know about my rhythm game endeavors, and it's definitely not something I bring up with random people or acquaintances that I'm not tight with.

I almost exclusively play 6k nowadays, so it's much easier to tell people "it's like guitar hero plus one extra key." Most of my family knows I play, and that I make files, etc. My brother's actually not too bad at SM, and at one point I was making a couples chart for Hajnal for my brother and I to play lol.

If people ask me what kind of games I play, I'll mention rhythm games. If they ask more about rhythm games, I'll tell them something like "oh I play StepMania, OSU, IIDX, etc."
