Losing skill and recovering after break?

Hello to all rhythm blooded keymashers!

I recently had a month break of FFR, and realized that my keytapping speed is about 88% of what it used to be. My accuracy also suffered a lot. I have now been playing for a couple of days, but recovering seems to be slow.

Previously I have had one to two weeks breaks, and noticed that one week break doesn't really affect to my FFR skills at all. Two weeks break causes just one slightly worse FFR day afterwards.

How long breaks you have had from FFR and rhythm games in general, and how long it has lasted to recover back to your normal skill level?

If you aren't already doing this, you can't say you're stuck. Plateauing doesn't really exist, if you aren't improving it means you haven't put in the effort needed to improve, or your effort has been misapplied. It's more of a problem at really high levels, but never totally concrete.

Not 100% sure, however i do know that whenever i get a cold - My skill drops down for somewhere between weeks to months. No matter how hard i try, i can't regain it back without some serious effort. Thankfully, I haven't been sick in awhile. I'm almost in my prime for the tourney

I've taken breaks of 4-6 months and getting my skill back usually takes up to 2 weeks. You have to push yourself to improve. You won't get your skill back by playing easy songs.

What is different from before for you? Concentration, moving fingers slower, the game don't feel the same? Sleep, practice/warm up and adjusting settings are pretty much all you could need. If it's more precise than that, try to explain why you would get X good instead of usual perfect count and work from there.

As for me, it's not about time, but about having a good day or a bad day. So, time may vary.

Okay to actually do some contributing to this thread since I frequently do this for IIDX.

Anyway a good portion of time it takes me to get back into my IIDX groove maybe after a couple months of taking a break is like anywhere from like 2 days to a week or something. The thing is (and advice for all you niggs out there) taking a break is good for the fact that A.) You get burned out from playing too much and B.) You can experience the effects of rubberbanding.

Rubberbanding in this case is kind of described as your kind of worse than your usual level starting out then you shoot off quite a bit past your current skill level within a certain time period instead of hitting a wall.

Heh, once every couple of months, I'll hop onto Stepmania to play for (literally) 5 minutes or so. (I've been "retired" for about 4-5 years now)

My accuracy/speed is much much worse than it used to be. Part of it may be because I've intentionally been trying not to put too much stress on my hands for quite some time now (in everyday life), so it feels "risky" to push my hands to go into "fast mode" because I know it's going to hurt later.

Re: Losing skill and recovering after break?

For a while taking a break and coming back was actually incredibly beneficial to me. I finally reached my peak performance with quite honestly, very little work on my part. My fingers just decided to work more properly.

Since then I've taken pretty large breaks and only play a couple songs every once in a while. Less than an hour at a time maybe twice a week if I'm playing a lot. This has been a detriment to my skill. I'm at pre-peak skill, but it just feels like my average now.

Recovery just takes work and time. Try short playing sessions multiple times a day. Perhaps that will help over a week or so.

When the game isn't fun for you anymore, take a break. It's not a job, nobody here is professional and getting paid to play and force themselves to constantly improve... it's a game.

Re: Losing skill and recovering after break?

I took a six to seven month or so break one time, where I would only play occasionally. I also got a new laptop at that time that um... sucked.

It took me about two months to nearly catch up in that instance, only because I was not playing that often anyway because the school year was beginning to wind down. If I had played pretty regularly, it would not have taken that long

Really what you have to do is play and continue playing. If you're frustrated, don't stop. You'll eventually reach and surpass the skill level that you were once trying to reach. You just have to have patience.

Also, stamina and speed are going to be hit pretty badly after breaks obviously. They'll come back though; you just have to play difficult files.

I remember one time I took a break for a really long time. I forget the exact time but it was like a year and a half.

I came back and I was actually better than I had been. I have no clue how.
