    Glitchy MIDI Fun

    https://soundcloud.com/nmilla/chordache-midi-fun2

My friend let me try out the MIDI keyboard I bought him for Christmas, so I decided to improv over some random chord progression I made. It's just a pentatonic scale, nothing that impressive, and also I'm sorry for the SUPER SHIT syncopation but I wasn't gonna quantize an improv and because of my audio interface, I have to compensate for some lag between pressing the key on the MIDI and hearing the note played. Also, the "keyboard" bit of the MIDI keyboard is buttons, not keys, which is weird to get used to.

I honestly don't really know why I'm posting this here cause no aspect of the "song" is very great, but eh, why not?

EDIT: I might re-record another one without the lag (I know how to fix it, it's just a pain and I'm lazy).

The slightly off-beat, non syncopated melody helps give it charm / character and makes it funkier than if not.
Personally I think this is a pretty fun "jam" -- this is a bit Ronald Jenkeesesque, in the way that you have a beat and just have fun improving around it. I certainly liked it.

      Thanks man!

Here's something I thought interesting, when I improv I naturally go up and down the octave in a saw wave motion. The fact that I'm using a 2 octave MIDI keyboard might have something to do with it but still.

So I made it into a song...

If i get a request ill turn download on.

Every synth was recorded through midi, still. Drums arent though.

Should've quantized the bassline and probably manually added some pitch bends to the lead. Sounds great otherwise, probably my favorite track of yours.

The bassline is perfectly quantized. O.o It might've sounded off cause the lead synth isnt ?.?

...and I really wanted to add pitch bends, do you know the best way to do that with massive in FL Studio? I cant add a "glide" note like I can with Fl studio natives.

Not without just doing it the old fashioned way internally in massive haha unfortunately

If you don't know how to do that,

              mono rotate on

time knob controls amount of glide

downside is, pitch bends every note. You'll have to clone the channel and pick what notes you don't want gliding if that's the case

Yeah, thats why I didn't do that.

*Why'd you pick monorotate over monophon? I always use monophon. Never knew the difference.

I also would want to pitch bend different notes different amounts so i'd have to duplicate a TON of massives. Is there maybe a VST that can allow me to automate a global pitch over a channel? I could do slides that way...

Yeh, downside of FL.. Hopefully they'll expand slide compatibility with FL 11 haha

                  btw

Do you have an Asio sound driver? Thats the reason theres the bad calibration normally
                  they're free download though

The reason for the lag is because I have a crap Audio Interface (M audio PRE USB) so I have to turn the buffer length up all the way or else I get those damn crackelies, so when I record I have to turn it down but if I turn it down enough to remove the lag, its impossible to hear any of the music because its all crackle.

I'll fix it if I get ASIO4ALL and run everything through that. Apparently its really bad with KORG products too, which is what I use.

Regardless, you should suggest some good drivers then, I'll pay.

You should just save up for a new interface altogether haha, would certainly help in the long run and enable you to not have issues if you ever expand to other DAWs with recording, imo at least

                      preferably one of these

but the Focusrite Scarlett is highly favored if you don't want to spend $18882384991928.99

unfortunately i don't know a whole lot about audio drivers though, realtek and asio have always been kind to me

I'm going to buy a Scarlett for sure, that was already a plan.

I'll probably just try that asio4all thing, thanks!

Dude, for sure. My controllers were ultimately useless without it. It's somewhat of a pain to download though, just download the new FL 10.9 beta and it comes with asio4all installed haha

                            Can't you just use this?

Downside is you can only do 200 semicent bends this way as far as I know, so no sliding. Still, this is how I've done it for as long as I can remember, 'cause most of my libraries don't support slides, or when they do, I can't control the speed of the slide which is important to me.

Also, I just listened to the bassline again, and I think it sounds a little off because the attack is really really slow on it. 'Cause it's wobbling a little maybe? In any case it sounds a little weird.
