    i'm lost

some generic videogameish techno stuff because I've never tried writing anything like it before

    http://soundcloud.com/stone-mcknuckle/man-vs-machine-test

how da **** is bass like this mixed

I've sent it around to a bunch of people and some tell me the bass is retarded and I should kill myself while others say it's just the right amount etc. Everytime I open it I just stare at the mixer board and end up closing the project down again. It's really subby so I've been considering toning that down but I'm not sure if I should turn the volume down instead and accentuate the mids/upper mids or whatever.

    halp

also I just noticed the snare is incredibly thick in the low-end which is kind of what I was going for but it sounds kinda crappy to me. the drums are half analog, maybe I should look into getting some dnb samples or something. any tips on what to get?

I'm not that good, but here are my thoughts:

at 0:14 its a good mix to my ears, perhaps bass just a tad lower.

I dunno, I kinda like it. I'm always a huge fan of heavy bass, regardless of what it is haha.
    Sounds good though.

    Keep messing around with it.

As Xiz said, the mix is nice. Bass is too low though, IMO.

Make it louder. I believe it should be dominant in this style of music.

^ For some reason I laughed when I saw that. Haha...

I mean, I guess in the long run its what YOU think sounds right, if that makes sense. Listen to what others did, and pretty much mimic it.

Love how you call it "techno" yet you can't get away from that metal sound. It's like adding your own personal touch. Like you have Contra blood in you and it transfers to your music style or something to that effect.

bass is so deep lmao. overpowers the rest of the song when i have my sub woofer connected. increase the mids and yeah id say town down the low. i dont think this kind of music should such an overpowering bass. though i dont think it shouldnt be noticeably present just not ON YOUR DICK present.

I was definitely going for heavy bass, but I don't want it to be overpowering. It actually sits pretty well with my subwoofer, although when I tried it on the (much lower quality) sub in the living room I couldn't hear anything but the bass all of a sudden. I'll probably end up doing exactly what you described in the end, but it's still confusing.

honestly I'm a little worried that what I'd normally refer to as "my style" is simply my lack of versatility as a composer. if that's really the case, that's something I'd like to work on.

                      Re: i'm lost

Just for clarification, I'm not using speakers equipped to handle low frequency when I listen to this. The bass sounded quiet as hell on these speakers which tends to mean that the bass is actually quiet OR that it's a sub bass and my speakers aren't picking up the low frequency.

My suggestion: duplicate the bass and shift one copy up an octave to give the mids some presence, make it about as loud as the lead. Maybe a little quieter. Then, with the original low bass, drop it down two DB or use a roll off on the mids and highs (or both) so that it doesn't interfere with the rest of the track.

That is all I would suggest doing as far as mastering goes. The melody itself is solid.

Edit: You don't actually have to do anything if you don't want to. Just because a track is technically mastered properly doesn't make it a good track. Keep that in mind. Electronic music is for your ears.
