sounds like really good downtempo hip-hop definitely not trap though.

but just because you didn't meet the genre specific sounds (hi-hats (rushes), snare rushes, vocal / gun sampling, usually in minor key and it sounds wonky i guess haha) doesn't mean don't keep going. I really dig the melancholy vibe of your track.

I always just figured trap music was hip hop tempo with a predominant "sub kick."

That's my impression of trap music. I see what you are saying now. I'm not going to make my song a trap song then, its going to stay hip hop.

Yup, good on you, your tune sounds great the way it is, imo.
No need to hop on and bandwagons, you already got your own sound and I like it the way it is.

1/3 hip hop (tempo and song structure similar) – however vocals are usually pitched lower or higher
1/3 Dutch house synths (The modern mutation of trap has seen the ‘Afrojack’ style of dutch house synth prodding become more prominent)
1/3 dub (Low frequency focus and strong emphasis on repetitiveness throughout a song)
