Favorite type of video game villain?

What kind of villain do you enjoy the most?

The sociopaths like the Joker? The Dark Lords like Sauron? Someone conniving and manipulative like Moriarty? What traits do you think compose an ideal villain?

Does cunning mean anything for the type of villain? For the most part I keep thinking of villains who do more emotional damage than physical. So super-villains like Galactus are a no for me. I think, Joker and Bane fit my description of an ideal villain. Not sure if any of it makes sense. Course I'm just shooting shit here.

Sociopaths make the best villains, imo. Sauron was evil for personal gain, while Joker was evil purely because it made him feel good.

Ramirez from SoA is probably my favorite villain of all time, story and fight wise.

I find Kefka (FFVI) to be the best video game villain. He just hated and destroyed everything and had no reason for it.

the X from Metroid Fusion was clearly the best villain. It infected everything, made your life harder and gave birth to Samus-X which scared the shit out of me every time I had to encounter it.

What about the assimilator type of villain, like the Borg from Star Trek: TNG? That shit would be scary as ****. A giant cube, and a bunch of mindless drones that adapt to anything you throw at it. I'd piss myself.

Merely because they can think they're better than you and their way of life is better.

                The tenacious kind: See Bowser.

Ultimately I think Bowser himself realizes he is unable to succeed and but tries over and over again -- To succeed or to piss off Mario is up to speculation.

Good thing Mario is not one to hold grudges, though, as you see the two race karts, play various sports and do party games together.

Sauron had an ultimate goal in all three ages, while the Joker just wanted to cause as much pain as possible, for no apparent reason.

Re: Favorite type of video game villain?

In general, I'm not a fan of villains who come across as "RRROOOARRR!! FEAR MEEE!" or whatever.

I much prefer the sort of villain who is articulate/lively/charming even but is really just a twisted son-of-a-bitch who is capable of some really nasty, manipulative shit. See: Gus from Breaking Bad. You can never quite tell what he/she is going to do next, and that unpredictability can be a scary thing.

Villains like the Joker are cool because they have nothing to lose. Even when he's getting the shit kicked out of him by Batman, Joker just laughs it off as Batman truly has no leverage and must play the Joker's game in the end. Guy's just in it for laughs. Kefka is pretty similar in this regard -- a sort of nihilistic "nothing matters so I'm going to destroy shit" mentality.

Dark Lords like Sauron I find lame. I'M SO EVIL AAAGHHH DESTROY EVERYTHING RULE THEM ALL! Alrighty then.

I think villains can be interesting, too, when they're fighting for a justifiable cause just like the hero. You could almost flip sides, depending on your moral compass. Xavier grows up in wealth and thinks humans and mutants can coexist. Magneto grows up in pain/strife and distrusts humans -- and who can blame him? The end result is two sides of the same coin.

And there's also the abstract villains like Giygas, or the looming, psychological juggernauts such as Pyramid Head...

                          perfect villain IMO:

Not op, sociopath , not clear objectives ( unlike those who in the first conversation with the hero tell them their plan and whatnot) , smart , nasty and twisted ( like pinhead ).
They must be relevant to the story , not only because of their evil plan but also for their past ( this part is not so clear but its understandable).
They must be cool and they must put themselfs allways ontop of their oponents.
therefor , i must say villains like joker are my favourites.

i loved Yggdrassil from Tales of Symphonia

huge twists about his character throughout the entire game.

at first you're not entirely sure of his identity besides the fact he's an angel, later you discover he's not an angel but he has a crystal within him that gives him wings, and finally you find out he's the one who ended the Kharlan War and his full name is Mithos Yggdrassil

overall he's a power-hungering fiend that changes from a good guy to a bad guy before and throughout the game's plot.

                              This this this!

I think the reason why I like him so much is because ultimately, his intentions are good, he's just got a warped sense of how the world's problems should be solved. He believes that what he's doing is right, and so the story comes to a head when the two separate ideas clash.
