CISPA: Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act

Here we go again. Legislation is quietly being passed around for a bill similar to the likes of SOPA/PIPA. I wonder what's going to happen this time around...

    http://www.examiner.com/progressive-...ncerns-critics

A controversial new bill that would allow for Internet censorhip is quietly moving through Congress. Critics claim H.R. 3523, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), constitutes a substantial threat to the Internet as we know it.

The controversial bill intends “to provide for the sharing of certain cyber threat intelligence and cyber threat information between the intelligence community and cybersecurity entities, and for other purposes.” The bill is being sponsored by Rep. Michael Rogers, a Republican representing Michigan’s 8th district.

According to a press release issued last week, the bill already has over a 100 congressional co-sponsors. Yet the bill is only now beginning to appear on the public radar.

Under CISPA, the feds, and other corporate interests, could require ISPs and others to provide information on Internet users without restriction. No warrant, no probable cause, would be necessary, as long as the action is taken in the name of “cyber security.”

According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation the bill contains “sweeping language [that] would give companies and the government new powers to monitor and censor communications for copyright infringement. It could also be a powerful weapon to use against whistleblower websites like WikiLeaks.”

Critics claim the bill is draconian in nature, and would effectively eliminate any pretense to online privacy and Internet freedom.

Ostensibly, CISPA is meant to be a tool to prevent online piracy, and protect the nation's security. However, critics argue that in reality the legislation would allow for the circumvention of any and all protections guaranteeing online privacy, allowing the feds and other corporate interests to monitor, censor and prevent online communications considered disruptive or harmful to the government or other significant private parties.

Indeed, critics claim the current legislation is so vague in wording that almost anything could be monitored or censored in the name of cyber security.

CISPA is being compared to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). Yet it remains to be seen if the same public pressure that successfully stopped SOPA and PIPA can prevent CISPA from being enacted.

It seems to me that when Congress finds out one of their bills is being rejected, they just put another one in regardless of the fact that it will likely bring on more controversy and hate. Honestly, Congress is bloody pathetic with their attempts to censor the Internet. Clearly they don't realize that the potential for good things to happen largely outweighs the potential for bad things. A lot of artists are famous from torrents etc. and it still does support them to some extent. Congress is getting worked up like a bunch of 5 year old gyrating over the next Call of Duty game.

GGNORE Congress; it's not gonna work this time.

Congress probably figures the internet is too apathetic to put in the effort to fight bills like SOPA more than once. They're probably right.

I find this offensive. Congress should be sent to jail.

Re: CISPA: Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act

                      Bump!

                      I guess they passed it.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Cyber Information and Security Protection Act late Thursday despite concerns over user privacy, the specter of SOPA/PIPA, and a veto threat from the Obama administration. The idea behind CISPA is to empower the government and corporations to work together to better protect American infrastructure from foreign attacks. But many civil liberties groups say the bill is too broad and threatens user privacy.

Despite growing resistance to the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, CISPA has cleared its first legislative hurdle. But the battle over the widely-criticized information-sharing bill is just heating up.

In an earlier-than-expected vote Thursday evening, the House of Representatives voted 248 to 168 in favor of the bill, which was originally designed to allow more sharing of cybersecurity threat information with government agencies.

The House passed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) Thursday night, despite some controversy over how the bill addresses privacy and a threat of a veto from the White House.

The measure, designed to make it easier for the federal government and private sector to share cyber threat data with each other, was approved by a 248-168 vote.

Its supporters and opponents were quick to issue statements following passage of the bill, which now moves to the Senate.

The House passed the controversial CISPA cybersecurity bill on Thursday, defying a White House veto threat and throwing the issue squarely into the Senate’s lap.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said the bill was “needed to prepare for countries like Iran and North Korea so that they don’t do something catastrophic to our networks here in America.”

The final tally was 248-168, enough to pass the measure but not enough to override the threatened veto. Forty-two Democrats broke with the White House to vote for the bill, and 28 Republicans voted against it.
                      Thoughts now?

Read an article that yesterday myself, Andy. Apparently it's stalled in the senate and the president has already "said" he would veto it if it were passed.
