In practical terms: It was created to become the universal currency, however it ended up being payments for underground/black market internet goods.
A legitimate source/company/what have you, would just use paypal since you can pay 10USD worth of yen, and the recipient will still receive the USD.
For those who do use bitcoins, they can be untraceable.
Legal uses of bitcoins: Bitcoin mining, then you convert your bitcoins for your country. Some companies use bitcoins as payment, but due to the evolution of bitcoin uses, most companies took away that option (i.e. amazon)[
