The only real problem is see is that stepmania.com has a sort of "grudge" against FFR due to a past event(s) where some people from here started some drama and shitstorm over some QED and other people's posts that were bashing the FFR game and community as a whole (e.g. calling the simfiles poorly stepped and inaccurate as well as questioning the overall behaviour and intellect of a community based on a handful of people without any real evidence or facts to back it up).
There's a real tension that still hasn't really been settled which is keeping the community gap huge. It's kinda hard to start anything in regards to this project until both sides are more or less willing to collaborate together. Sure, some new mods/admins were appointed as a starting point but has anything really been achieved in the process? Not at all.
And starting an entirely new site kinda defeats the purpose as the main goal is to make stepmania.com the one, major source of everything SM related similar to how other games have one, single place for everything rather than all these fragmented communities and different cliques.
This situation alone is complicated and I'm not sure how this will even work out, even with all the support this project has gotten. This is just what I've observed the past few months.
I dont really see what the problem is, load of people left stepmania.com like load of people left other stepmania comunity's the only active members are just some kids that post in the chat forum which just only include silly games and you have people that show up now and then asking for help thats all, other than that its pretty much dead, like even chris danford barely is on the forum posting, the people that are the most active stepmania related are the people for sm-ssc, like because its so dead the forum can be deleted and rebuilded from scrap, only problem is all the old stuff/history will be lost that's about it.
and because its so dead I dunno who on stepmania.com can have a grudge agains FFR in this time so
I never knew about QED before that thread on FFR a while ago existed, but now I hate that thread with a passion
Not only did that thread attempt to rebuild SM, it attempted to reset the mindsets of people on what a "good" file is and what a "bad" file is. It brought old files back to the light, and people are suddenly shooting down "modern" files. A thread with good intentions, but people like me get the butt end of the deal. gj promoting a primordial sm mindset to everyone now...people are hating on technical files now without even knowing what the term means
If you do rebuild the foundations of SM, make sure you make people become more open-minded than what the QED thread was promoting. What a terrible, terrible thread.
If, as Shikari said, "a fresh start for Stepmania community is what we're missing", make sure that fresh start doesn't include a clean slate of the brain. Reminiscing about older files is one thing; turning it into a trend while turning back on "technical, newer" files from stepartists like myself is something else. Something you don't want.
I really like the idea of reviving the sm community, since I've started fading away from it mainly because a lack of motivation. Once this starts going into action I'm definitely going to see if I can become a more active member, as in learning how to step files, stepping files, getting better at 6k and other styles, etc.
Random Suggestion: Maybe once this starts kicking into action you guys could hold some kind of contest, drawing, raffle (whatever you want to call it) where people could win certain prizes that have to do with SM, such as their own OP file, a new keyboard, special "perks" for the SM website, etc.
I think people need to forget about the way we were conditioned to make files and just focus on fun/challenging value.
For real. That's the reason I quit. Everything was about making/playing (pretty much) dump files, or files with 3/4 arrows (hands) on every line. That killed it for me, because there was no reason for index files anymore. XD
I think it's because our generation got too good at the game. We just kinda forgot the essentials that made us start playing in the first place. I find older packs have much more replay value than anything recent.
Just thinking about playing the old packs makes me feel good inside. Those were the days when everything was fun. It would be incredible to have files like those again.
Dang, thinking about them makes me want to download SM just to play through those packs again. That was the pinnacle of fun. (In my opinion)
I just recently Got back into Stepmania and I've got to say playing all the old songs from the older packs has really brought back a lot of memories from the good ol days.
I think it would be awesome if a select group of active and Good stepartists made a pack dedicated to the old classic files and songs that made SM so fun and popular back in the day. something like that would be really cool imo.

I agree that it's important, but there's no reason to completely throw aside all the little technical details that have been sprinkled in over time imo. I feel like there should be tons of different styles and varieties of charts floating around so that there's something for everyone. (...or is it already like that?)
