That was very well written, Mal. To me, it speaks of a sadness of the mind from the driver's point of view. It seemed that the girl had no longer felt happiness, and was confined into a deep sadness. To me, it looked like she knew what was coming, as the driver thought about death being inevitable. She knew what would happen, but he didnt. He slowed down, because of her. And because of her, he cheated death. It just seems like that's kind of ironic how he was saying about there being no point of cheating death, yet he had done so.
