Ender's Game was a great book, but the others... not so much.

Its a bit old, but I agree with this one. Sure it could be because its written by a North Carolinian, but in truth, the first two are excellent, the 3rd is ok. Thats all you gotta read though

Besides, catch it before they ruin it with the movie. Shame too, in my head it would make a fantastic movie.

Actually, we really should keep this forum a bit more active. I am always hunting on new things to read.

The Ender's stuff that follows Ender past the first book are not remotely as good as the stuff that follows Bean and the rest of the jeesh past the first book. The whole speaker for the dead, xenocide, children of the mind arc just didn't grab me much at all. Ender's shadow, shadow the the hegemon, shadow puppets etc though? Fantastic.

If you like Card's writing, pick up a copy of 'Empire' which is his new one, or give a look to the Alvin Maker series. Also, Card wrote the insult swordfighting content for 'The Secret of Monkey Island'

House of Leaves....I read it, and I guess I'll back it like everyone else, but frankly I found the stuff that took place in the house to be so much better than everything else, than if they cut everything else, I think they'd end up with a better book.

My main issue with it was that it had too much art and not enough book. I get how clever it must have made him feel to write such a ridiculously formatted novel, but since I tend to read for 8, 10 hours in a stretch, the constant need to flip back and forth pages, turn **** upsidedown, and apply blacklight just made it more of a chore to read than anything else, and it really took away from my ability to actually appreciate the words.

If you're going to read any Morrison I'd recommend Beloved or Paradise over Jazz.

Other than that I'd recommend Red Earth and Pouring Rain by Vikram Chandra and The Tragedy of Sohrab and Rostam. I've got this copy (and it's pretty sweet).

Only read Jazz, and I had the feeling she could do better. The prof I had when I read that book was nuts for it, though.

Another suggestion:

Dance, Dance, Dance by Haruki Murakami

It's a pretty light read and doesn't really involve much thinking to understand the plot. It's the kind of book that makes you want to continue reading chapter after chapter to find out what happens next, which is what makes it really great.

umm....-tries to think of things other than the usual High fantasy-

Just Listen ~ Sarah Dessen It's an amazing book, incredibly well written and the characters grow and develop throughout.

Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse ~ Stephanie Meyer This is only if you're into a little be of romance. The author's style is amazing, and the characters are some of the best I've seen. Warning this is a vampire novel, but not vampires in the way you probably think of them...the way she expels the myth is actually entertaining.
