When still working on your songs, send drafts to maybe two-to-three artists and see what they have to say. I personally send my songs/ask advice from KgZ, /DJS\ and Arcsynth. I'd suggest that you ask different people, however.

As hard as it may be to believe, FL Studio is one of the more intuitive professional DAWs in my opinion.

I may have said it wrong, but what I'm trying to say is that FL is more for those that like to fool around to find information.

If you want to use something to start out and learn how to create simple beats, how they're laid out, using default synths, and basic synth creation software, I would DEFINITELY go with FLS. Don't feel overwhelmed with it... Take it a step at a time... There are tutorials littered around the internet on that software, besides the fact just about every single one of us here have used it, or currently uses it, so we can help...

Once you have the hang of how that software works, and musically composition-wise, how it all works, you can springboard onto more advanced software in my opinion, such as what I prefer to use currently, like Acid... Others like Cubase & Reason amongst others...

As far as DJing goes, if you ever have any questions, hit me up... I've been DJing for about 2 years now... If you want to get some gear to start you out, basic, and yet cheap, $400 for the Numark Battle Pak... 2 tables with the bent-arm config, 2-channel mixer, and headphones... That was my starter setup

I actually started with FLoops and Didn't enjoy it.
I would recommend reason. Simply for the fact that a full fledged DAW is a bit harder to get into than a standalone midi sequencer ( which still has some amazing devices already) And now with reason 4, the tutorials and the manual are incredibly helpful.

once you feel like you've got the hang of making full songs in reason you can then get a program like ableton 7 and Rewire reason into it.

It basically turns reason into one of the most powerful VST's you can get. With drum sequencers effects and perfect sync into your daw.
Then you can get really technical and start setting up audio tracks in ableton for each individual channel in reason. Which gives you an IMMENSE amount of control.

because honestly. one of the only things that causes problems with reason is the fact that it has no VST/i support or direct line recording. which is entirely rectified once it's rewired into a DAW.

As long as you use it well, it shouldn't matter what program you have.

I think the problem with FL is twofold:
1. It's history.
2. The samples it comes packaged with.

FL was developed to be a loop generator, not a full functioning DAW, thus its early name of Fruity Loops. This means that it started out incredibly simplistic; it's no wonder that it was treated as a "toy" and still is. However, I think people become so convinced that professional music is so elite and so far above the general populous that they forget exactly what a DAW is needed for, sequencing notes and mixing tracks. Arguments of better audio engines are negligible, as FL can render 32-bit float, which I believe is actually above industry standard. If anyone would seriously take a look at Buzz they would realize that its ability to customize/automate literally anything about a pattern or synth USING SIMPLE NUMBERS, instead of automated knobs, makes it incredibly powerful. If only it had better development...

The samples that FL comes packaged with actually seem to work against itself. What happens is that you get users who are completely new to production, who probably have no idea what they are doing, using pretty ****ty samples. I think it lends to the idea that FL is "basic". Personally, I think the fact that FL gives its user a rather ENORMOUS default sound library, as well as an awesome slew of generators and FX, can only build creativity and interest in production for anyone. Most DAWs don't even come packaged with much of anything, which means to use them requires using your own VSTs/DXIs/hardware, and its probably why these DAWs have a "professional" sound.

FL is insanely powerful, with so many features and methods of production, it caters to almost any genre. Quite frankly, the **** it came packaged with has just been heard too much/used in the same way. I think you guys would very surprised if you knew how much of my kits are simple 3oscs.

Silexz's forums has a really helpful and knowledgeable community (if you haven't found that out already); if you have any questions regarding FL Studio, you can ask pretty much anyone there and they'll help you out.

And you should really consider listening to some of their music, it's really amazing.

Buzz is the only program you will ever need. Anyone who uses anything else just needs help covering up their lack of talent. >.>
