I'd always listen if a label is proposing a deal....just be very wary and don't jump on the deal without making sure you get a fair shake and stay owner of your music.
Existing solely on the web as an independent is tough though. There is SO MUCH awesome music out there that doesn't get heard because the artist has no clue or skill at marketing themselves. You gotta get your music IN things.....things like FFR, or make some remarkable youtube video, or other games....sadly you can't get terribly far with just good music alone. Something else will get you your first 15 minutes of fame and then the good music will carry that.
