Look, the main reason why pennies came around was because someone needed the lowest form of currency they could get. Pennies back say 30 or 40 years ago were actually something to hold on to. Another thing is that americans are far to greedy to not get every cent they earn, even if they change the lowest form of currency, many people would be dissatisfied even if it was more convenient. Sure they are a hassle to carry around and of course everyone nowadays throws them away, but fact is they still hold value, and anything worth anything in this country is worth keeping no matter how stupid you are =P. I predict that we will slowly move more towards a digital form of currency but never actually get completely into it.

One thing, where did you get the idea that no one uses the $1 coin anymore? I have a machine at our school that accepts 1,5,10, and 20 dollar bills and gives you that exact amount back in silver dollars. I use them quite frequently actually, i just think coins are easier to loose so people stick to bills.

Im a coin collector, I have a coin right now in mint condition thats 90% silver, so im waiting for silver prices to get rly high, so I can sell it.

The value of money is what people makes it. And for now smaller change is becoming obsolete. There was once a time in France where you could pay millions for a single loaf of bread just because at that point, money was so useless to them.

Coins probably won't die out entirely though, I mean, they've been around for thousands of years. They'll make a comeback somehow.

Well sure you change the value of money, but that doesnt mean you change its worth necessarily. They arent becoming obsolete, its more like people are choosing to use them less than they have been used in past times. Just because some people use them less doesnt mean that a general petition from the masses has changed the fact that it is still money and people still use it regardless of whether most people decide not to. The thing that could happen is if congress decides to stop the production of a certain type of coin, in which case there would still be billions and billions of them in circulation, if it does happen... it will happen in a long long time. But they wont lose their value and because of that, people will still use them.

Quarters and above are useful. Pennies are not.

I rarely ever use coins these days. When ever I buy something, I practically never keep the change. The only time I use small change is at school, becuase small change can get you a small snack, but that's about it.

I've probably never used a dime, nickel, or especially a penny when I ever got change back. Usually I drop it and don't pick it up, I chuck it on the ground for sheer boredom, or I just totally forget about it.

Also take this into consideration- The penny costs more to make then its acually worth.

Quarters are the only coins I probably would keep track of, becuase I keep them for school.

If something is a dollar or over, I always bring the extra dollar(s) up.

Now I'm starting to think soon that the dollar coin is gonna be more common, becuase practically no one that I know of ever keeps change.

Maybe this is just me becuase I don't take care of my money, or the fact that I live in CT, which is the wealthiest(sp?) state in the country (or at least one of the top 5).

well i save my change and throw it in a jar thing everytime it makes a dollar then tally it, and i have 130 bucks in there so i like change.

Isn't it illegal to damage, deface, deform, or destroy any type of currency? Or is that just Canada?

ITS ILLEGAL?! crap. i might wanna stop melting pennies in automotive class on my spare time. Thats so not cool. I can understand though it being illegal for bills (5, 10, 20, 50, 100 etc) but not coins. Besides, whos gonna catch me. Is some random old guy gonna come up to my door when i mess around with a penny?

Canada uses the coins quite well, although pennies i agree with you all. they gather in my car and find their way everywhere, and are just a hassle. I have this small collection of pennies that gather in my room but that only adds up to 3 bucks. Also canada is thinking of bringing 5 dollar coins around. And there are already a small amount of 50 cent coins, which i think would work well. 50 cent coins are a cool idea, and if you put them into a vending machine, the machines think they are dollar coins :O I know all this because i live in the city where Canada's coins are made. Winnipeg. lol.

Defacing government property is against the law. However, it's good for the economy for you to be destroying pennies, dollars etc. You're essentially making a penny or dollar donation to the whole world, divided up between everybody who has any sort of money. Or you could donate the penny. Same thing happens (only more utility comes out of donation).
