To determine if the HP Recovery Manager is operational, press the power switch to turn on the computer, and then repeatedly press f11 during the startup. If the Recovery Manager is operational, the computer will display a prompt to either recover the operating system from files stored on the recovery partition, or create a set of recovery discs which does not require the purchase of a replacement recovery disc. (if f11 doesn't work, then you will need to F5, choose repair my computer, then look for HP recovery in the next menu)


If you want I can TeamView ya and turn off ALL the startup and services you do not need.

Well first of all it seems you got your CPU down to a healthy tempurature. Laptops run hotter than Desktops period. The first awnser of this article says it all.

I don't mean any negativity with this comment but you should really learn how to use a forum before you start using one, and it's understandable if you don't since a lot of people don't even know what a forum is. On FFR's front page go to "Forums" on the left sidebar, then go to Bits & Bytes (It's arguable but IMO this thread should be there too), click "New Thread", create a title then put your content in. Take some time in making a proper post, and make sure to tell us what operating system you're using (Windows Vista, 7, Mac), and what's going on. Even some information about the hardware of your computer (usually stickers on the front) would be great. The more information you provide the better we can help you with because with "FFR isn't working" doesn't give you a hope in hell at fixing anything.

Right, it's back to idling at 60-70 degrees. @_@
I'm now 90% certain it's a hardware issue because I've cleared off most of the unnecessary processes, the fan+heatsink is immaculate, the vents are clear and the processor is idling at 0-3%. Wtf this is like overheating a car while it's off or some shit.

the only time my laptop ever idled at 60-70 degrees was when my fan was clogged but you said you cleaned them so idk

Try another temperature sensor reading utility (try speedfan). When you ended these processes did you use msconfig? (did you also turn off services as well?) You can also disable certain parts of windows (aesthetics/themes) to see if it will help.

I'm using CoreTemp and Speccy. Both are telling me the same thing.
I turned off ~30% of the services and >9000 processes through msconfig.
Disabling Windows Aero didn't do anything...

AAAAAAHHH This laptop is IMPOSSIBLE to open! :/
You have to unscrew >9000 screws on the bottom, take out the battery pod, the HD, the wireless card and the keyboard. Then you have to slip a plastic opening tool between the chassis and the top of it and lever to lift upwards and clear the clips without snapping the bloody thing. Once it's free from the chassis, you have to remove the cd/dvd thingy, gently remove the ribbon cables (!) from the touchpad because it's one piece with the chassis, and unplug the speakers. To get to the processor, you have to unscrew the mobo and push the ports in to squeeze it out.
Same process to get to get to the CMOS. Silly HP.

Anyway, pic of my processor, tagged for enormity. Also, Jewish HP didn't spread the paste+used some horrid cheap stuff that's become a baked-on clay. :/

May go outside(!) soon to buy a tube of MX-4.

edit: Bought a tube of compound, applied it and pieced my laptop back together. 6 screws left over, don't know where they normally live. Don't know if the laptop is screwed. (c wut i did thar?)
Core temp is still reading 50-60 degrees idling, but the air flowing out of the vents is nowhere near as hot as before. I reckon there might be an issue with the internal thermometer. Mindf*ck to the max.

Remember, when applying thermal paste make sure you remove absolutely all of the old stuff. That stuff is a ceramic mess. Also, less is more. You want to spread the paste extremely thin.

I scraped everything off with an SD card. Am I supposed to apply the stuff to the CPU and heatsink or just the CPU?
