After last night's nineteen inning game between the Pirates and the Braves, many people were out raged on how it ended. It was a classic play at the plate. The runner was blatantly out, but the umpire called him safe, thus ending the game.

Some of you might remember the "imperfect, perfect game", thrown by Armando Galarraga. Twenty-six straight outs. Last play, again, runner was blatantly out at first base. Umpire called him safe, ruining a PERFECT GAME.

My question: To prevent these incidents from occurring in the future, do you believe a replay system should be added to review and change bad calls made by umpires?

As fun as those long games are statistically, they're not practical or good to the sport as a business. Making the game longer and with bigger breaks is going to be a pain and might even be used as a tactical move by managers rather then its actual use.

Also in the second example, they were still able to win and really you're now saying they need to implement instant replay for just the statistics. Stats are such an important part of baseball you're going to see instant replaying happen in non-game changing moments. This is why its currently only set for judgement calls on homeruns.

I mean for god sakes, you see people boo just because the pitcher throws to first base. Each team plays over 160 games. You're gonna get mistakes and the sometimes changing strike-zone per umpire is actually an interesting changing element, not unlike the weather or shape of a ballpark. And even with instant replay there are still problems like in football. In hockey it mostly just has the purpose of goals so I support replays for homerun use in baseball.

Well the main arguments that a lot of baseball purists usually say is that it "removes the human element" from the game, or that it is not traditional. Both arguments I find are actually bullshit,

On a related note though, I was seriously considering designing a system that would detect whether or not a pitch was a ball or a strike with a pair of cameras mounted underneath the plate and pointing upwards, but never got around to doing it.

Thats an awful idea. Why don't we all play a video game? Like I just said, the changing element of the game is a legitimate part of the sport. Never has being 'the same' ever been a theme of baseball, just general guidelines. This is how we get walls covered in ivy and other odd field constructions. Its part of the game and if someone doesn't like it go watch football, a game so mired in such specific rule technicalities sometimes teams are playing against the rulebook and replay camera rather then playing each other.

Yes I believe getting the call right is the most important thing. Just because in the old days they didn't have the "technology" we have today, it doesn't mean we shouldn't use it. It's like trying to argue: "I shouldn't put on air conditioning because back in the day there was no air conditioning. I have to preserve the natural element of the way life used to be lived."

The replay system however would have to be used fairly quick because I agree baseball can't really take that much longer per game. And be used for plays that are definitely questionable. What is questionable? Plays where an umpire is pretty clearly wrong with the help of the technology. Borderline plays shouldn't be overturned.

Replay system should be used for everything other than calling balls and strikes. I'm a big Pirates fan and was pissed when that ump blew the game. They should definitely implement a replay system but I don't see it happening for a good 20 years.

Second, the location of the strike zone changes based on the idiosyncrasies of each batter's height and stance. Attempting to rigidly define one (as with various TV aids like FoxTrax) would be, to put it frankly, a mistake.

this iz a good point that i failed 2 mention in my first post. a strike is a ball that CAN b hit, which depends on a variety of things. therez not a machine (unless there iz) that iz developed enuff 2 create a strike zone 4 each player in the MLB.

on another note, umpires provide their own strike zone which the pitcher can use 2 their advantage. cliff lee, 4 instance, will figure out the boundaries of the strike zone of individual umpires, and pound away at the corners, which can be unfukwittable 4 a large amount of batters. a mechanized strike zone/judging system would take out this entire element of human manipulation.

It should only be used for plays at the plate, or game ending plays. Otherwise, the human element should be apart of the game.

I would get behind this. Only for the last out or for runs, I'd support a replay. That really isn't much.

Why isn't that much? Just reminder, where else can replays be put in effect? Balls & strikes, foul balls, plays at first, stolen bases, low-caught fly balls, balks, pickoffs, check-swings, and more. Then you'd have to come up with more rules, such as a ball ruled foul but actually just fair. Thats a possible double or triple, but now you need to create rules of assumption.

Umpires are extremely good when it comes to calling plays anyway. Sure, they do miss a couple here & there. Some bigger than others obviously, lol. But I rarely hear people give credit to the umpire when he makes the correct call on an incredibly close play.
