What else would you expect out of Microsoft?

The same mistakes that any company would make...Apple and other MP3 player companies aren't without their own set of mishaps.

Microsoft needs to just stop trying to compete with apple as far as mp3 players go.

In many respects, the Zune equals or is better than the iPod Classic; there's no reason at all for Microsoft to randomly give up. Considering how recently Microsoft entered the MP3 player market, it's pretty amazing how well they're doing.

Don't do anything, your Zunes will work normally tomorrow.

There's a leap year bug in the clock, which means that everything will be fine tomorrow; just watch out for the next occurrence in 4 years (unless there's a firmware update, of course, which there will be).

How can a coding mistake result in a synchronized failure. I don't really understand that part. Wouldn't that result in random failure when that code is used?

Exactly. And the code relates to this specific moment in the Zune's internal clock due to a problem with leap years. So at this specific moment, that code was "used" and every device that did so (i.e., every device synced to whatever central clock the Zune uses) ended up getting the issue.
