Then you better be prepared to wait many many years, by the time it gets large enough to consume you, your time may already be up.

Everyone has a gravitational pull because everyone has mass. You have a gravitational pull, your friends have a gravitational pull, your car has a gravitational pull - you get the idea. The thing is, as you may have already noticed, these things don't have an extremely strong pull on you and you don't have an extremely strong pull on them. A blackhole is just all that mass pushed together into an extremely small point. It doesn't become more or less massive when it becomes a blackhole. Now imagine two small atoms being smashed to form a blackhole, even then, its mass is still the mass of the two atoms combined and its gravitational pull will be extremely small. It will take hundreds, if not millions of years before it can actually consume you.

      Actually, that's not right.

A black hole of that kind basically "evaporates" right away. I'm pretty sure that the only way they would know it had even been there is by measuring the theoretical Hawking radiation.

And I'm not sure how it would "evaporate" or where that mass would go, but I read somewhere or saw it on a video that they said the same math that said it COULD make a black hole also said that the black hole coming from it would disappear right away too and wouldn't be dangerous at all.

Re: To everyone concerned about a manmade black hole

(im not 100% sure of this idea just so everything is clear)
If a blackhole the size of 2 protons were to be made, there would be very very very little chance that it would have enough time to absorb any other matter since both protons are suspended in a magnetic field and therefore wouldn't collide with any other matter. So what everyone should really be worried about is the the ridiculously small chance that at the very moment the particles collide, the magnetic fields accelerating the particles collapses, for some reason or another, and the black hole falls into the accelerator wall within the time it would take for the black hole to evaporate.

Another possibility for the destruction of earth (and a much more frightening one I think) is that the collision will create a negatively charged strangelet. A strangelet is a subatomic particle consisting of one up, down, and strange quark. If a negative strangelet were to be created, it would have enough time to interact with the subatomic particles in the surrounding area and exponentially convert all the matter on earth into a GIANT LUMP OF STRANGE MATTER. You would see, in the last few moments of your existence, everything around you turn into a soup of sub atomic particles. Neat idea eh?

Black holes gradually leak away their energy. The reason they disappear instantly is because they contain almost no energy to leak away to begin with. They're microscopic and harmless - the equivalent energy would not light up a light bulb, and thus it would dissipate immediately.

The reason arguing this as a threat is *retarded* is because IF it were true (that the LHC could indeed create black holes, which I do not think it can), there are black holes everywhere on earth right now. Why? Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Rays that GREATLY exceed the energy associated with the LHC enter our atmosphere constantly, smashing into oxygen, nitrogen etc creating interesting collisions.

Clearly, since the earth has been around for 4.5 billion years and it hasn't gone anywhere, this is inconsequential and people need to chill the **** out.

The problem is that black holes of that sort aren't of the variety people are trained to think of. They'll always think of the supermassive, galaxy centered type. They're going to think of the ones deep in space, collapsed stars, that suck in anything and everything.

This is the exact same reason we shouldn't worry about any of the possible disasters which could arise from the LHC. Anything it could possibly create would dissipate before causing any harm ( ie: negative strangelets break down into less massive, harmless particles nearly instantaneously due to its unstable nature )

I don't even see why people are terrified of the possibility of strangelets. The chance of particular conversion to strange matter shares an inverse relationship with the energy of the collision. Their (the strangelets') stability, then, is also limited to the lower temperature ranges, which will be far exceeded by the LHC environment. If strangelets could even be formed, the other accelerators (of lower magnitudes) would have already produced them. -_-

Same. I'd like to see a satellite get sucked in and see what happens. Of course even light would get sucked in which is why black holes appear black, there is no light. So I'm pretty sure the camera would just show pure darkness. UNLESS IT DOES lead to an alternate universe, dimension, or somewhere else.

You can't see the object once it "enters" the black hole, but you can definitely see the object go into it. So in a sense, you can see it disappearing just like you would see your drink disappear although you can't see the inside of your mouth while drinking.

It's not 100%. Mostly everything, if not all theories about black holes are not 100% true. I've heard theories about black holes consuming matter and then spitting it out somewhere else known as a white hole, but once again, this is a theory and I haven't really seen much proof for it except that it kind of makes sense.
