It's more or less a question of the social graces of that area. You can more or less get away with saying comments that wouldn't be appropriate in mixed company in certain parts of the West coast, yet you probably couldn't get away with it because the graces are more conservative.

It could have to do with the fact that the East is older then the West, therefor, embracing the old social cues that it loves. It's almost like going to another country.

To answer your question: I lived in Maine for around six years of my life and I always go there over the summer. You can definitely see the contrast between the Third Coast and the East Coast.

In Philly, there are numerous establishments that won't even serve you if you do not follow their standard ordering/paying protocol.

Lorenzo and Son's Pizza on South St - Must order your pizza in "slices" and order a coke product or water for a drink. If any deviations are made you are kicked the **** out.

Pat's King of Steaks - First window, order your steak only saying whether or not you'd like cheez-wiz and onions. For example, "Wiz-Wit" gets you a steak with cheez-wiz and onions. You then move to the second window where you order your drink and anything that isn't a steak (fries, etc) and pay. If you ask any unnecessary questions, use improper dialect, try to do anything out of order, or just plain dawdle, you're kicked the **** out.

What violence on the east cost?
I guess I can't really understand this to much being I've never traveled further west than to Illinois for an anime convention, which everyone is friendly at anyway. I don't think it's very violent over here, is it?

In Rochester you don't talk to people when you're outside, you walk past them, avoiding eye contact. That said, you get stabbed in the abdomen from College Park, Georgia to College Park, Maryland.

I was born in California (Orange County) where I lived for 5 or so years before moving to Virginia. Since then I have gone back to visit just about every summer for vacation. Last summer when I was out there I was buying my cousins ice cream in a Cold Stone. The chick working behind the counter was really busy so when she gave my cousins and me our ice creams, she left to go help someone else before I had paid for it. Thinking she had forgotten, I asked out out, "so wait, do I pay for this now or ...?"

The guy who was standing behind me very happily answered, "oh no, didn't you hear, it's free today! You can just go ahead and leave!" Being the friendly and sociable person I am, I naturally replied with "Oh great, free ice cream!"

After the chick came back and I paid, I walked outside to where the rest of my family was waiting and I came to a sudden realization. I thought to myself:

"What if that man had said that exact same thing to someone else on the east cost?" I decided it probably would've gone something like this:

East Coast Man: "So wait, do I pay for this now or ...?"

Affable Californian: "oh no, didn't you hear, it's free today! You can just go ahead and leave!"

At this point, without even hesitating, the East Coast man would've pulled out a knife, and stabbed the californian right in the face. The person waiting behind the californian would've caught the body falling without a thought, then handed it off to two men who would be standing by to throw it into a trunk, and then into a river.

There's no WAY you could get away with saying that kind of crap here in the east coast.

Has anyone else who's been acquainted with both sides of the United States noticed how drastically more mean the East Coast is?

Was the person who made that remark saying it in a joking and friendly manner... or was he saying it and sounding like a complete dick?

If the hypothetical eastside man was saying it in a friendly, teasing manner; I dont really think he would get shanked. The thing is, this is the eastside we are talking about... so most likely, if the guy who made that remark was from out here, he would probably be saying it to be an ass.

EDIT: Yeah. There are a bunch of jerks on the east coast. It might also have to do with the fact that all of the old Confederate states are here and people are just drastically different. If you live here, you have to be a fighter, as in, not let strangers bully you around or whatever. Even some of the most harmless comments are taken seriously. I'm guessing I would be one of those people who would punch that guy for joking like that, but a glare would be fine too.

He was being friendly, what I'm saying is that amount of open friendliness isn't tolerated on the east coast.

Memphis, Tennessee for the win. We have the highest crime rate in the U.S. We have one of the highest murder rates also. We have gangs that are super brutal. I get scared most of te time.

Maybe. I've never lived up north. This is the highest I'll ever be I think.

The only reason I say that is because a lot of people here just get offended so damn easily over stupid things that I kind of turned out that way too. It's ridiculous I guess.

I know the thread is about comparing the west and east, but I used to live in New Jersey. Now I live in Florida. Now I wouldn't say that the North is actually "meaner" than the south, but I remember people up North being alot more..."serious" about things, if thats the correct word. Like, you don't see all this "southern hospitality" up in Jersey. People up their don't really care.
