Re: 110 interesting facts that will amount to nothing in your lifetime
16. Venus is the only planet that rotates clockwise.
92. All the planets in our solar system rotate anticlockwise, except Venus. It is the only planet that rotates clockwise.
Wrong. The direction a planet rotates depends on your viewpoint. For instance, a planet rotating clockwise as viewed from above the North Pole will appear to rotate counterclockwise as viewed from above the South Pole.
54. Did you know that 85.7% of statistics are made up?
Typical joke.
70. Honey is the only food that doesn't spoil.
Water says hi. If you're including honey as "food," then water is "food" too.
99. India invented the Number System. Zero was invented by Aryabhatta.
Wrong. Saying that India invented the "number system" is just stupid, as previous civilizations also had number systems, just ones differing from the one commonly used today. Also, the concept of zero originated independently around the world, roughly around the same time. Both the Maya and the Indian civilization developed the idea. If I'm not mistaken, there were other prominent cultures that did the same.
106. The names of the continents all end with the same letter with which they start.
North America. South America.
67. In Alaska it is illegal to whisper in someone's ear while they are moose hunting.
69. It's against the law in Willowdale, Oregon, for a husband to curse during sex.
73. In Atlanta, GA, it is illegal to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole or street lamp.
74. Horses are forbidden to eat fire hydrants in Marshalltown, Iowa.
77. If a child burps during a church service in Omaha, Nebraska his or her parents may be arrested.
80. In California, animals are banned from mating publicly within 1,500 feet of a tavern, school, or place of worship.
84. In Arkansas it is illegal to buy or sell blue lightbulbs.
All of these laws share a pretty similar story universally. Some strange, off the wall event occurred involving one of the things in question (giraffes tied to light poles, blue lightbulbs, etc.) which necessitated something being formally outlawed. Generally, this is done solely for something to become "official" and the law has no real purpose, effect, or enforceability. Either that or it's an old, outdated law that lawmakers never bothered removing from the books.
There are other really stupid "facts" in this list that logic will tell you are false, but I can't be bothered to look up examples for them which is why I'm not bringing them up.
Well yeah, the distinction I was trying to make is that "rotating opposite of the way it normally should" and "rotating clockwise" are different. You can't say any 3-dimensional object is rotating clockwise or counterclockwise, because that will change depending on the viewer's perspective.
What you can say is "This object appears to be rotating clockwise when viewed from above" or something like that. But even that fails when you go to scales such as that of space, because "above" and "below" cease to exist.
