Re: I'm trying to quit smoking...

Nicotine has been proven to be just slightly less addicting than heroine.

My friend quit by pinching himself every time he wanted a cigarette...
He said the pain kicked his craving, and the association with pain made the addiction undisirable...

    It worked.
    one hand, no mercy...

Re: I'm trying to quit smoking...

Well, let's break it down. In order to quit you need two things. 1. You need to have enough motivation to quit and 2. You have to break both the psychological and physical addiction to nicotine.

      1. You have to first convince yourself that you want to quit and the benefits of doing so. This can vary, but you have to be completely convinced it isn't calming your nerves or serving any helpful purpose, but is poisoning you and wasting your money. From here, you need to remove it completely from your environment in one swoop, including everything you associate with smoking, and set consequences you do not want to face for breaking the rule of not smoking. It doesn't matter how you set them...but set them. It usually helps if someone else knows you're quitting since they can help enforce this.

The idea is really fairly simple, but you want to condition yourself to despise the idea of smoking. If you are serious enough about it and constantly weigh your benefits of quitting vs the detriments of actually smoking you should be able to condition yourself to stop.

However, be very serious about this before starting. Most people fail because they are not motivated enough to stop.

      2. Nicotine will help you get over the physical dependence. The nasal spray is actually the best, but IIRC it requires a prescription, so you might want to try the gum/patch.

The physical dependence will die fairly quickly. From here on it's a pure psychological battle and you have to convince yourself of this every time you want to smoke. It is absolutely crucial you enforce the penalty for smoking and use logic to convince yourself that smoking is not worth it. I know so many people that are completely over the physical addiction but cave in to the psychological want...D:

      Good luck!!

Sunflower seeds. Those things are addictive. They helped my dad quit smoking and he smoked for at least 30 years. He went cold turkey...but yeah. The sunflower seeds REALLY help. So buy in bulk. They're cheap!

Re: I'm trying to quit smoking...

Thanks for all the advice guys. It's definately not just a physical addiction. I have a routine. In the morning I always have a cigarette on my way to school or work. When I walk from class to class on campus I always have a cigarette or two or three. Then on the way home I smoke. Once you get to that routine it's just so hard to break.

I had one cigarette today. I think that's pretty good, but tomorrow I'm not planning on smoking any. It won't be too hard aside from the drive to work.

I'm going to get myself some gum like other people suggested. And just keeping things in my mouth should help in general.

            Again thanks for the encouragement.

If you smoke again you are banned from FFR.

There. Now you have to decide which you are addicted to or want more.
              FFR ... or CIGARETTES?!

Re: I'm trying to quit smoking...

Seriously though. My addiction to FFR might actually be stronger than my addiction to Nicotene.

And I smoked hookah tonight. I failed to mention that because I didn't want to get flamed. Does that count?

Re: I'm trying to quit smoking...

If it's weed; it doesn't count.
                  If it's tobacco; you failed.

Seriously; Doing it gradually almost never works. The mindset you have while doing it 'gradually' burries you from the start.

If you do it gradually and one day you mess up and you have a little more than you are supposed to then you will think "Oh well its ok, im doing it gradually, I can just smoke less tommorow."

Then you repeat this until you are back to full blown smoking.

Even if you don't think you will make it, set your goal as to not smoke at all. When you do this and you smoke a ciggarette, it's still better than the 'gradually quitting' method because at least if you screw up when trying to go cold turkey you will feel more guilty about it.

Feeling guilty about it will keep that "I shouldnt smoke mindset" and thats good.
If you can't break the smoking habit, make it a habit to feel bad and disgusted about doing it. This will naturally make you want to smoke less and work harder to quit. Even if you don't quit the first time you will grow to detest smoking more, and it will pay off in the long run.

Thanks for the advice. And I do feel guilty I feel guilty everytime I smoke and then have to have a conversation with people because I'm self conscious about the way my breath smells. Or when I go to see my family and realize that I smell like I've been smoking everytime I pick up my baby cousins. It's just gross. I have to stop.

It's pretty sad when you can't even sell your dead body for a decent chunk of change. I think I got the lowest amount!

Edit:.....I did get the lowest amount.

I just quit smoking as a New Years Resolution after 3 years. My right lung nearly collapsed recently, and I thought that was a pretty good reason to stop.

So.. Why's she banned now? Well good luck with dropping your addiction. I think cold turkey would be best, good to just get that junk out of your system all at once and deal with withdrawals.

My dad smoked for about 30 years, and then he quit smoking because my mom died of cancer(s). He still smokes when he drinks, because those things always tied in with one another. But now if he's sober and he tries smoking a cigarette, he can't handle it. It's a good thing that you're trying to stop. You're still young and your body will adapt to what you've done to it. It's better that you do it now, rather than 30 years into it.

And yeah, don't tell yourself that you'll stop when you finish "this pack" or "this cigarette." When you really believe you want to quit, you need to throw it all away during the moment. It's amazingly easy to talk yourself out of doing things when you don't want to do them.
