OK I think I know what's wrong with your RARs. Let me guess: you're trying to download a RAR file into StepMania's "song" folder for quick and easy extraction?

Go to C:\Program Files\StepMania\Songs, and under the address bar you should see a button that says "Compatibility Files". Click that, then navigate where you are now to the folder within songs where you saved the RAR.

Programs without administrator permission cannot write to system folders (including Program Files), therefore it moves the file you're downloading to a local folder instead of a system folder, where it can't harm the system.

And about Flash: I get the speed up/slow down issue too when playing FFR, but it only seems to happen for me when I use Speed Mods. I don't know what causing it, but perhaps Flash isn't quite perfect under Vista as of yet.

The safest thing to do would be this:

Right click on your StepMania folder in Program Files, and choose properties.

Click on the "Security" tab.

Click on the "Edit..." button, and press "Continue" on the User Account Control prompt.

Under "Group or user names:" choose "Users ([computername]\Users)"

With "Users" selected, check the box for "Full Control".

Click Apply, then after it is finished setting the security info click OK.

This allows any program, no matter the permissions level, to be able to read, write and modify all files in your StepMania file.

Edit: If you ever want to download a file to a system folder without going through this process for the folder you want to save to, you can right click on your browser's icon and choose "Run as administrator". I wouldn't recommend always running your browser as an admin though (especially if you use IE), because there are potential risks involved with that.

I find that the jumpiness is much less severe on Firefox, so if you use IE I suggest switching. It's still present, but not as frequent, and I've sort of gotten used to it.

When in doubt, Right click the .exe file. Then click properties. Then click the compatibility tab then select Windows XP SP2, then click apply, then OK. Also right click then run as administrator helps on some programs that "aren't vista compatible."

Also make sure to go to Control Panel>User Account> Turn off the "user account control"
By doing this you can get rid of that annoying prompt screen that fades in and out

Ok screw this. I'm going to head down to some store and get a cheap ass router and hook back up my old PC. Some lag is better than mass speed up and slow down.
