for high end computers-- you're absolutely right, dells suck at all points past 1500...
For an inexpensive computer like you're looking for, go dell.. they have good inexpensive computers around 500 for desktops, but if you're looking for a good laptop for those prices.. You're outta luck. Hope that helps

Alienware is overpriced and overrated.

I bought mine in parts from Newegg.

Basically, you don't want Vista right now. You can't buy a computer today without Vista. The only time you would want Vista would be a computer that could run it smoothly, which is a lot more than your price range can afford. I suggest not buying from a store, or just waiting until the summer.

My suggestion, DO NOT buy from a "bargain manufacturer" They will throw their crap quality parts in there, the bottom line parts. If you want quality, get it built in parts, it costs more ofcourse, but wouldn't waiting an extra month or two be better?

Example: 2 years ago I went out and got a basic computer built for $1100 canadian, it has run like a dream (I filled out a sheet with the parts I wanted and got it made) do not order from Dell or MDG or anything like that, get it from a place that will build it for you, then it's really "customized". Also, even if you don't know SQUAT about computer parts, that's fine! The people at wherever you go should know what their doing (god forbid).

On the other hand, my girlfriend went out and got a $2000 MDG model that she had saved forever to get, and she can't return it. It's a piece of crap! Sure it has the 3.0 ghz processor, the 2 gigs of ram, and the the pretty vista. But everything crashes on her and it laggs terribly (I don't think she downloads all that much porn)

So what im saying, GET IT BUILT. Don't go with anything like that, even your best buys and future shops don't last as long as built, but longer than Dell.

Also, off topic here, I have one 19'' Widescreen and one 17'' LCD, that's right, DUAL SCREEN > ALL.
