I was waiting to hear whether or not these were real go-karts or not. Cuz the ones at those arcades and crap all have a max speed and cut the engine when it is reached. Took a lot of years of random go-kartting to figure out how to override that cancellation.

Heh, very true, but these aren't the pay-for-ten-laps carts. They're built minimalisticly to conserve weight and have 6.5 HP Honda engines. That may not sound like much, but they aren't cars, so they have top speeds of 70 mph, and believe me, you hit that a lot.

The track I do requires you to let off before turn 1, and brake hard for 3, lest you fly right off the track and into the signboards.

Kick ass.

I'd love to do a few laps on a track like that. Every single track I've ever been on has been weak as hell and the gokarts don't go very fast at all.

And yeah, these karts have roll cages or something, right? Really, 70 mph sounds a little unsafe without things like that.

Actually, there's nothing to keep you in. Crashes (or worse, flipovers) can be really ugly - a few years ago a guy was nearly paralyzed, and there's a couple of broken bones every season. Mind you, we wear racing helmets and rib protectors to minimalize injury when it happens.

It's nothing when compared to faster stuff where dying isn't very rare, though.

I remember going on one of those slower go-karts before at a class trip. Some kid who was a bit overweight crashed into the wall dead on at the last lap while trying to turn in. He was gasping for air from the collision because he didn't expect it.

I can hardly imagine crashing in a go-kart at around 3 times that speed. Must be a tad bit scary at times.

Then again, I guess you'd have to suck really bad or have something majorly go wrong to crash at 70 MPH.
