It has less to do with standardization bacause there isnt much of a compatibility issue, they all do pretty much the same thing. An operating system is VERY different because it has to do A LOT more than play songs. The point is that if every operating system was almost exactly the same then there would be no compatibility issue. So you can either have an industry with very different products and one that is dominant, or (like the mp3 player's) one with very similar products and a variety of choices. They all do the same thing and are all compatible with mp3s. I probably shouldn't have compared the two because you can't, they are like apples and oranges. But the point still stands, there are other options other than ipods that work just as good.
