It wasn't 2 hours. What happened, according to the survivors, was that the ocean receeded all the way to the horizon, to the point where dying fish and crabs were lining the entire landscape. Some people tried to gather the fish, but others were intelligent and knew what was going to happen. Then, the water came back in the form of a tsunami.
