They looked at only the first 35000 words of each person, so that people who had written more (who would by definition just end up using more different words) could be ranked against newer people who hadn't written much.

His vocabulary was "around the same as most rappers" from his first 35,000 words as from theirs, but the complete works of shakespeare are hundreds of thousands of words long.

far from ignorant, having listened to black rap music for all my highschool years, I know it's the most common word in their vocabulary, maybe not for rappers like immortal technique and KRS1 and those old school funky rappers like eric B and rakim, but those gangster rappers overuse this word, especially tupac.
