You want to spend $30 instead of just placing your laptop further away from you where you eat?
I'm failing to see the problem that warrants buying something else to play your videos.
I've tried placing the laptop further away from where I eat, but sometimes I might accidentally spill something that will cover the entire table, or I might knock over something messy that could fall on my keyboard. I would rather not take any chances.
*edit* Arntonach, I unfortunately don't own a television in my dorm. >.< Thanks for the suggestion though!
I keep coming back to this thread to read the hilarity..
On a related note, your options for playing things not on your computer are basically limited to some sort of handheld device (ipod video, tablet, or smartphone) or moving things to a USB stick to be played on someone else's tv/computer (although the tv isn't going to work unless you have the hookups mentioned prior in this thread).
Your most legitimate option from the sound of it is to use a tray or something to hold your computer while you eat on your bed, AWAY from the computer. That way
1) You aren't eating over it
2) You can't spill things on it

An external kb isn't going to help her unless she is keeping her laptop off of wherever she is eating entirely, and just using the keyboard (which is totally possible).
Here is a link to a wireless keyboard and mouse for $30, which would allow you to have those nearby while you eat, yet keep your computer a safe distance away.
